Product Description

About the Author

I was born in Yorkshire, England. When I was 10 years old my grandfather gave me a copy of A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and from then on I was hooked on science fiction and fantasy. I worked for Scotland Yard before moving to Japan for ten years to lecture in literature and philosophy. To date my writing has included nonfiction work on literature and cinema, and movie and TV scripts. I co-produced in the Japanese film industry for a while, when I lived in Tokyo. My secret burning passion has always been to write the kind of imaginative and experimental Science Fiction and Fantasy I loved as a kid in the 1970s - so that's the path I've set myself on now. My favourite authors include (in no particular order) Michael Moorcock, Jack Vance, Gene Wolfe and Mervyn Peake.

Exciting from start to finish! Couldn't put it down. This book manages to introduce amazing, complicated and fantastical ideas through the eyes of believable characters. A very original story.

One of the great things about browsing bookshops (off or online) is the joy of finding a book that you had no expectations of , to find that you've uncovered a complete jem. Thats Thumb. The characters are rich and believable, the situation and story line is massively inventive (John Guy Collicks imagination must be as big as the universe the book is set in) and the plot is totally gripping. Its the true art of a good sci-fi author to take a highly imaginative universe but still make it real and relevant which is exactly what Collick does here. The only disappointing thing was to finish the book and then take a look to see if there are any others in the series to find that this is the first and that I'm going to have to wait! Loved it!

The thing about reading science fiction is that you can just sit back and enjoy a ripping yarn, set somewhere alien and exotic. It still has to be a good read though and this is exactly what Thumb is. A sympathetic hero, and other interesting characters, set in an 'other' space and time, with a story that carries you along right up to the end. Although the descriptive writing is rich and paints a picture of this very alien place, it does not hold back the story. All the time I was reading Thumb I could visual the sci-fi mini-series it could so easily make. A book I would recommend.

I'd say you'd be hard pressed to find a darker more surprising novel than Thumb by John Collick. The enormity of the mindscape he projects and the imagination it must have taken to propagate it defies belief.
The characters possess a wide variety of traits; troubled, secretive, passionate, menacing. Some are downright evil. Humanity toils and sweats for millennia to create a gargantuan God from what is left after the end of the Universe. Think Game of Thrones in space with all its political shenanigans, legends and chicanery. Grab yourself a pillow and make sure the doors are locked. Because once you've started, you won't want to stop.

The first thing that hit me about the world weaved together by John Guy Collick is scale. This isn't only in reference to it's literal size; every page of this book is bursting with imagination and utterly enthralling concepts. It threw the world out at me and I easily lost myself in the story. This is a novel I couldn't put down!

I wish I had the way with words to fully pay homage to what an excellent read Thumb is. I can't wait for more!

Suffice it to say: READ THIS BOOK!

(And PRAISE BE some absolutely fantastic female characters!!! It's a shame this is so rare!)
