Product Description

Synopsis

Ground fighting is taking the martial arts world by storm, but how do you get to the ground safely and end in a prone position? What are the dangers of throwing and taking an opponent over? In this book on throwing and take-down techniques of Greco Roman wrestlsing, the author teaches how to control vertical grappling and destroy an assailant with a demolishing throw. Including the original "blow before throw" techniques banned from sport grappling at the beginning of the century.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction 18 Oct 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Like all the books in the 'Throws & Takedowns' series, this one illustrates a collection of the most street-worthy moves from the sport.

This is a very useful volume. Whereas anyone with some martial arts grappling experience (particularly Judo, or Ju-jitsu) would most likely already know most of the throws outlined in the Judo and Freestyle Wrestling volumes, the Greco-Roman moves are far less common.

Hence even an experienced grappler in other arts could learn some useful stuff from this book.

waste of time and money. there are a vast array of books by actual Wrestlers that give you a far greater insight into grappling.... a very thin and dissapointing book

1.0 out of 5 stars Pure Garbage 3 July 2003
Format:Paperback
I tried hard to like Geoff Thompson, but I can't. This book is a joke and I couldn't recommend any of his books. It is double spaced with black and white still-life photos. In other words, totally lacking any kind of detail. The command of the written word is horrible, even to a yank. His sparring partner and he both wear judo jackets, rather than sambo jackets. His sparring partner wears black tennis shoes with black socks that give the appearance of wrestling boots if you don't look closely. He jokes about the sexual connotation of grabbing a sweaty chest, and fouling his opponents in competitions. He endorses his own personal fighting style that ends his fights in 3 seconds or less.
I had hoped to learn a little about Sambo in order to supplement my Judo technique. I read this book closely and finished it in less than an hour and didn't see a new technique from a martial art form that has thousands. A good writer and a good photographer could better this book in a day and e-mail it to their publisher the same night. They could visit a prison and have some gang bangers do demonstrations for them. I'm afraid that is the only kind of knowledge that the author learned from his 9 years working as a bouncer. He probably beat up a bunch of drunks in that time.
If you want to refine your judo technique against a tight jacket with epalettes, I recommend "Shuai Jiao" ISBN 84-203-0263-5. It is written in spanish, which is no problem for me. Shuai Jiao is chinese judo wearing a tight, short sleeve jacket. I only recommend this book if you don't mind spending the money. There is very little available on the subject of Sambo.
If you are looking to integrate a self defense system into your judo, I recommend Gene Lebell's Handbook of Judo.
