Since then, the world has been awash with Greatest hits compilations that recycle more or less the same material. The bulk of his recordings for RCA remain largely untouched by reissues, and he certainly has not had a decent Box Set that collects his work in a proper and cohesive way. So we make do with the occasional release that goes a little deeper than the rest, and this album needs highlighting for that reason.
It certainly does cover the years, although his first release, Snakes Crawl at Night, is not here. His early material is represented by Just Between You and Me and Does My Ring Hurt Your Finger which are excellent tracks, no evidence here of stumbling around looking for direction. Charley also did covers rather well, and Hello Darlin' a Conway Twitty cover is surprising, but welcome. He does seem more at home with Me and Bobby McGee and Kaw-liga.
But where this album scores highly is its use of album material like I Think I'll Take a Walk and Through the Years. Solid mainstream country this, and it sits alongside A Poor Boy Like Me to make the point.
You do get Is Anybody Going to San Antone? and Crystal Chandeliers, just in case you only have them a few times, but integrated into the whole 20 tracks they actually help to broaden the picture. Finishing on Kiss An Angel Good Morning rather cuts Charleys recording career off half way through, but if it means concentrating on earlier material, then its a good trade.Read more ›
