Long before Mary Shelley created her Gothic masterpiece, Frankenstein, she told other tales - spine-tingling fireside tales of lost loves and drowned sailors. She also shared true stories of a girl endlessly drawn to her mother's grave, and of a girl whose father had forgotten all he once held dear. Sharon Darrow has skilfully spun fiction from fact to recreate the details of a particularly critical time in Mary Wolllstonecraft Shelley's life - when she was fourteen and sent away to live with another family, the Baxters. Masterfully matched by Angela Barrett's exquisite, atmospheric illustrations, this is a rich tapestry of stories within stories - those told, those written and more extraordinary, those lived.
About the Author
Sharon Darrow teaches on the Writing for Children course in Vermont College, USA. This is her first book for Walker. She lives in Chicago with her two cats, Darcy and Bingley. Angela Barrett is widely regarded as one of this country's finest illustrators. She won the 1989 Smarties Book Prize for Can It Be True? and the 1991 WH Smith Illustration Award for The Hidden House. In addition, she has been shortlisted three times for the Kurt Maschler Award and once for the Kate Greenaway Medal. Her other picture book titles include Beware Beware, Joan of Arc, The Walker Book of Ghost Stories and Rocking Horse Land and Other Classic Tales of Dolls and Toys.

Award-winning illustrator Angela Barrett utilizes luminous watercolor illustrations to vivify the life of Mary Shelley. Author Darrow skillfully weaves some fictionalized accounts into the facts known about Mary Shelley's life.
Born August 30, 1797, Mary was the child of two famous writers, philosopher William Godwin, and Mary Wollstonecraft. Sadly, the elder Mary died only a few days after her daughter's birth.
As a child Mary told stories, often ghost stories, and she spoke of a girl who could not forget the mother she had never known. She also read the books written by her parents in which they envisioned a better world with education and freedom for all.
Her relationship with her father was to change when he remarried. There were disagreements between young Mary and her stepmother. So, at the age of fourteen she was sent to Scotland to live with friends, the Baxters.
One can imagine that the child was bereft; she had lost her mother and now her father turned from her. But the Baxters offered her not only love but intellectual stimulation as well. Some are of the opinion that Mary's Gothic masterpiece, Frankenstein, began to grow in her mind during this time.
Mary later eloped with the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. She was to write novels, plays, stories, and poems. Today, some 200 years after her birth, she is well remembered.
"Through the Tempests Dark and Wild" is masterfully presented, and would be a valuable addition to the libraries of all young readers.

Through the Tempests...

I would recommend this book for children ages 7 to 10, who want to become writers, historians of literature, or who just love history.
I would categorize this book as historical fiction, because it talks about Mary Shelley, an actual person.
Although the graphics, (illustrations) are meant for younger children, the content is probably for a bit more elder children who will be able to grasp a concept of this book.
Contradicting this, these characteristics of this book allow younger readers to learn more about Mary Shelley. Also, at least everyone has heard of the story of Frankenstein, and the kids (7-10) who really enjoy this tale can at least get more in depth with the author including basic information.

WHAT a book! Hauntingly illustrated and absolutely riveting, this book entranced me, never mind my daughter (who has since named her toy lamb Mary Shelley).
