5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent and essential book 12 Jun 2001
Format:Paperback
This is an esential guide to the GR11 - but the author's timings are too fast. I accept that he makes no allowances for stops but I could not maintain his pace despite just completing the London Marathon in under 4 hours. I also think that there should be stronger advice to walk after mid June when the route is free of snow and all the refuges are open.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it! 29 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is a real walking guide, with detailed maps for each section of this 44-day odyssey. Like any walking guide, the real review can only be written after the reader has "walked the walk", so this reviewer has to be careful to say that, in the planning stage, this book certainly seems to have been very well researched. Each day's route is carefully laid out, with a description of the shortcomings of the signage and the alternative routes. Since the GR11 takes one away from what passes as "civilisation" for days at a stretch, the detailed information about where the route intercepts shops, campsites, huts and bothies is invaluable in planning the kit requirements. Armchair walkers might find the small format difficult to read, but on the trail the small size will come in to its own. I have searched high and low for English language material on GR11, and this really does seem to be the definitive guide. Don't leave home without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book... 2 Aug 2003
Format:Paperback
in all. Most useful. Coming from an office environment, the timings are initially ridiculously optimistic. However, after 14 days or so, they begin to be met and then surpassed as fitness increases. Prospective walkers' attrition rates seem to be quite high - other people successfully completing it include 100 mile runners and 2000 mile walkers!...so be warned! His route descriptions are generally excellent, but so is the way marking. Only 4 or 5 times was the book really necessary to find the way. The section on location of shops/banks etc is most useful 'though is beginning to become only a little inaccurate and needs updating (now there are extra banks and hostels.) The author becomes a personal friend by the end - learning to intrepret his warnings (sometimes over paranoid!) and descriptions. Good luck with it!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great 25 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
I walked the GR11 end to end this year and used this book the whole way. This book always comes up on searches for the GR11 and is good but not great for the following reasons:

There are few references to local flora and fauna within the book. Also few references to history. I spent days walking through sites littered with bunkers from the Spanish Civil War but the bunkers are mentioned but I wondered constantly when and which side used them. I really did not expect fixed defenses.

The navigation guides are sometimes a bit skant. For example there are times when the author indicates that finding you way is tricky or you may find navigation difficult which is not really good enough. Sometimes he goes to great effort with bearings and landmarks but not often. Also be aware that the first three days are now very difficult as the local authorities in these regions have given up maintaining the path

I met another walker using the Douglas Streatfield James book which covers most of the walk. He went north but gave me the book which had more details such as 'do not follow the yellow markers...' which I nearly did and also references (sometimes detailed) on local history, culture, flora and fauna.

There are few references to local hotels or restaurants which would have been useful when arriving tired and late in town.

I guess that the author has put a lot of effort into this guide and I thank him for this as he became almost a walking buddy. I am not sure if the author had kept it light as you do not want the additional weight of a hefty tome if you are travelling light.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beware! 16 April 2012
Format:Paperback
Take care. The 2008 edition listed is not the latest. Cicerone have published a new edition in March 2012. I assume Amazon will get this in due course but in the meantime I'm paying the premium and ordering direct.

4.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable, though not perfect 10 Jan 2010
Format:Paperback
I've now led two expeditions along different stretches of the GR11 and, quite frankly, couldn't have done so without the confidence offered by Paul Lucia's pithy, robust guide.

Other reviews have noted its strengths and weaknesses and I think they all stand. Suffice to say, its shortcomings (historical context, flora and fauna etc) are forgiven when you realise you're not carrying a weighty tome with you up some blood-curdling corrie or other.

It's so good, in fact, that it's the basis of our third trek along a different four day stretch - this time above Huesca in Aragon in July 2010. Eleven of us will rely on it for safe passage whilst raising money for the incomparable Claire House Children's Hospice. Thanks for the inspiration, Paul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely useful guide 15 Sep 2010
Format:Paperback
Awesome guide and quite accurate. Got a bit lost leaving Irun so I recommend checking out a road map in advance but after that it was very useful. Some water points are not there any more or are from taps that taste bad so don't rely on those 100%, although I would say that 90% of them are great and fresh. Would have been nice if natural water points were included too for people carrying water filters as many streams which aren't on the Prames or sketch maps aren't mentioned. Pretty hard to criticize this book though as there is only so much info you can put in it without it becoming huge. I would highly recommend it to anyone doing this hike. :)
