Product Description

Product Description

Judith Todd, the daughter of Sir Garfield Todd, erstwhile prime minister of colonial Southern Rhodesia, spent eight years in exile in Britain as an opponent of white minority rule in Ian Smith's Rhodesia. She returned to Zimbabwe shortly before independence in 1980, and soon realised that, far from being the solution to Zimbabwe's ills, Robert Mugabe and his ruling Zanu (PF) party were increasingly becoming the problem. As the country slid into economic and social decline, Todd had a front-row view from her position as director of a local development agency. Over the first 25 years of Mugabe's rule, she kept journals, notes and copies of letters and documents from which she has compiled an intensely personal account of life in Zimbabwe.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tragic Country, 8 Jan 2008
By F. A. Punter (Bedfordshire, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I lived in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe for many years and am familiar with the situation in the country and with many of the people mentioned in Judith's book. She writes with a great depth of knowledge and personal experience, giving an accurate and comprehensive portrayal. This is not a book to be skipped through, it requires the reader to concentrate on the detail, particularly the large number of "dramatis personae", many of whom are, or were, leading political figures. This book is a factual record of a period in Zimbabwe's history which reflects very adversely on the Government of Robert Mugabe.

5.0 out of 5 stars An amazing story , 17 Dec 2007
This is a truely amazing story about a woman who has lived her life serving others. For those who would like to know a little bit of the history of Zimbabwe this book puts the pieces together. As a young Zimbabwean born after independence 'born free' this book captures our history and is a must read for all others like me. A truely amazing story. If only we all had the courage to stand up of what we believe to be right.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very touching....., 7 Jun 2009
By R. Webster (Brighton,UK.) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
From the point of view of a fellow dispossessed and disinherited Zimbabwean, I found Judith's experiences very relevant, haunting, emotional and heart-rending. All I can say is that it is a story I don't think I will ever forget. One day we WILL return, to claim our birthright!
