Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

James Garner substitutes for Rock Hudson in this hilarious Doris Day outing. Housewife Beverly Boyer (Day) happens by chance to give an executive of Happy Soap an honest appraisal of one of his company's products. Charmed by her forthright and honest manner, he makes Beverly the company spokesperson. When she becomes an advertising sensation, her husband (Garner) has to deal with the social ramifications of his wife making more money than he does. Day and Garner are both in good form, and Garner nicely portrays the mounting frustration of bewildered husband Gerald. Gerald's refusal to accept that Beverly's new career infringes on her duties as housewife is, of course, outdated thinking today. Nevertheless, the film works and is sincerely funny. No wonder: comedian Carl Reiner cowrote the script. --Mark Savary

The thrill of it all staring Doris Day and James Garner is a great film to watch which the whole family will enjoy. Doris Day playing the role of Beverly Boyer is happily married to her husband George Boyer a doctor (palyed by James Garner) Untill one day, Beverly accidently stumbles across the career of television stardom, advertising Happy soap which, wins over an audience of thousands. Her husband is jelous of her fame and the two fuss and fued and then eventually fall in love again. This light hearted comedy allows you to sit back with all the family and enjoy yourself. A great film to watch. I am a great fan of Doris Day and I think that this film is one of her greatest along with Calamity Jane and Pillow Talk. I like this film because of the natural way that Doris acts in her movis. Every word flows so naturally and she plays her parts very well as if they were her. I would recomend anyone to watch Doris Day films as they have great qualities just like her.

Dr. Gerald Boyer (James Garner) helps a woman to become pregnant "in his role as a doctor". He is the classic conservative husband who assumes that his wife would stay home and make catsup while he earns the living. However, after being offered an enormous amount of money Beverly Boyer (Doris Day) decides to take a job doing commercials for the family that James Garner helped.

On the TV shows that Beverly Boyer does the advertisement on, each week Carl Reiner gets to play a different character (same plot) bad guy. They say it is too subtle for the audience to notice that it is the same script. After all, we do not notice that the same plots run through most TV programs today.

Naturally this upsets Dr. Gerald Boyer. So he devises a scheme to rectify the situation. The interplay between the characters keeps us laughing.

No one can tell me that the original person slated to sell Happy Soap, Spot Checker (Pamela Curran), could not sell ME soap from a bathtub. Ha, Not risqué huh?

This is a great 60's comedy and if you like the over flowing soap suds scene then you will also enjoy "Bachelor in Paradise" (1961) with Bob Hope.

Great comedy! 25 July 2008
Format:DVD
This is one of my favourite comedies ever! The script is very competent (Carl Reiner) in its critic of televison and consumerism. Doris Day is rather competent as the bored wife that lands a televison contract and James Garner partners with her as the obstretician husband that feels left out after her sudden success. I felt obliged to right this comment after reading a previous "review" that didn't do justice to the film's brilliance.
