There are projects for jazzing up old wooden furniture for both house and garden, and suggestions for pulling together mismatched items into cohesive schemes. The all-important finishing touches - display, china and ceramics, glassware, paintings and frames, fabrics and trims - are covered in detail, and you can learn how to create a variety of stylish accessories for your home. Get insider's tips on what to look for at antique markets and in charity shops, and how to care for and restore your bargain purchases. 3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of repetition 31 Mar 2009
By Melissa
Format:Hardcover
This is a good book but the amount of repetition lets it down. For example, the body text is repeated in the captions under the photographs and the authors seem to be short on images. It is useful to see rooms from a variety of angles and more detailed shots but some images have been used 2 and 3 times. It feels a bit like the authors have tried to make a little go a long way and there wasn't enough material to fill the book. The tips are good, there is definitely some useful advice in here and the images are seductive but this book could have been half the size and half the cost...rendering it rather unthrifty! Glad I purchased it but hoped for more.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nifty and Thrifty 5 May 2009
Format:Hardcover
I was given this book as a housewarming present and I love it. It has simple, clever, inexpensive ideas that are so fresh compared to the over-styled, over-painted and over-primped rooms on all the television 'make-over' programmes. This book has made me see that Less is More. It's about using what you have (a row of bottles on a windowsill!), rearranging what you don't (a casual pile of mismatched and clashing cushions!), updating what you can't replace (old lampshades covered in buttons or fake flowers!) and being nifty and thrify (a stripe of paint up the stairs instead of carpet!). It has inspired me to de-clutter my new home, paint the walls in light colours and use my imagination to make ordinary objects seem extraordinary. My only complaint is I want MORE of these simple, beautiful ideas, and I hope they do Thrifty Chic II very soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and useful book! 28 April 2009
By Carmel
Format:Hardcover
I just love turning the pages of this book - the photography is beautiful and
I have felt really inspired to look at my home and my posessions in a new
light. I've learnt to appreciate my odd mugs and mismatched plates and to
display them proudly in my kitchen - the charm is in the mix. Every room in
the house is looked at and loads of practical advice given for giving your
home a makeover without spending a fortune and the projects at the back are
really inventive and I am now the proud owner of a button lampshade!

3.0 out of 5 stars Summer house feeling 28 Oct 2010
By S.Simon
Format:Hardcover
The interiors in the book look very much like wooden, romantic summer houses, often with a sea view or at least a garden. If you live on a tight budget it might not be your reality, and I would have liked to see the author try and decorate a city apartment or mixing the romantic style with more modern style furniture. But besides that a nice book - especially if you are about to equip a summer cottage.

3.0 out of 5 stars dissapointing 8 Jun 2009
Format:Hardcover
I too was dissapointed in this book, there are some nice ideas for arranging things and making lovely cushions etc. but almost every room has white emulsion walls. To me the whole point of interior design books is to help you see how to do things differently, but this book doesn't do that. The rooms to me look far too clinical and cold. There are lots of lovely vintage things, but not enough variety on the walls.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing 2 April 2009
Format:Hardcover
I had high hopes for this book but was thoroughly disappointed at how little advice for decorating your home on a shoestring was offered. Don't buy this book unless you find it for less than a fiver

3.0 out of 5 stars Not enough colour!! 24 Oct 2009
Format:Hardcover
I found this book disappointing and have to agree with the person who complained that the photographs were repetitive and that every wall was white. I have another book by the same authors which is much better than this one. Also, while some of the ideas are good, I didn't think there was much I haven't read before. And another thing - I wish I could find some of the things featured in this book in my local junk/charity shop!!! I suspect most of the items have been sourced from upmarket 'vintage' shops and cost more than the odd quid.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should be called Thrifty Cheek 15 Dec 2012
Format:Hardcover
This book is definitely style over content. I expected plenty of designs and techniques, but there are only 7 projects - and they are really uninspiring. A patchwork cushion, an old button lampshade, button decorated jars, a fabric doorstep? I mean, come on! Basically this is just a book of nice photos of a few tired shabby chic ideas, and even then the same room is pictured several times over so you see the same vase of flowers 4 or 5 times, in slightly different focus/close-up/angle. The so-called 'chic' ideas range from milk bottle vases (yes really!) to a bowl of pebbles! Even that idea is trotted out again when she presents another bowl of pebbles ... with insects drawn on them. Maybe this book is ok for people with absolutely no idea where to start. If you are that hard up, save yourself the price of the book and google 'upcycled fashion' or 'recycled chic' or 'refashioned wardrobe'. Learn how to spot a piece of bargain furniture that is a nice shape under the grime and how to recover/upholster/wallpaper and varnish it. You will not learn that from this book.
