Biography

Composer, guitarist, singer, and bandleader Frank Zappa was a singular musical figure during a performing and recording career that lasted from the 1960s to the '90s. His disparate influences included doo wop music and avant-garde classical music; although he led groups that could be called rock & roll bands for much of his career, he used them to create a hybrid style that bordered on ... 5.0 out of 5 stars 3 must have albums 14 May 2009
By Ted Maul VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This boxset contains Freak Out!, Absolutely Free and We're Only In It For The Money, Frank Zappa's first three album-length releases. And, you guessed it, they are all amazing.
Freak Out! contains lots of the things that would preoccupy Zappa over the course of his career- from doo-wop pastiches ("Go Cry On Somebody Else's Shoulder") to avant-garde, vaguely musique concrete experiments ("The Return Of The Son Of Monster Magnet") It also has some- and I'm sure some Zappa fans may find this term offensive- brilliant pop songs ("Hungry Freaks,Daddy", "How Could I Be Such A Fool?").
Absolutely Free is occasionally forgotten, coming as it did between 2 stone cold classics. However it is arguably is just as good. The first half, brilliantly, is about vegetables, and somehow manages to musically reference about a million things (Stravinsky, The Supremes & Gustav Holst among them). The second half has the epic Brown Shoes Don't Make It, one of the most insanely ambitious pieces of music recorded by anyone in the 60s. You also get both sides of the dumb but fun Big Leg Emma/ Why Doncha Do Me Right? single.
We're Only in It for the Money is probably the most highly regarded of these three albums, and with good reason. It honestly stands up to any other album of it's era, and any other time for that matter. An anti-hippy, anti-psychedelic album that is also incredibly psychedelic. And it has What's The Ugliest Part Of Your Body?, which is surely the funniest song the Bonzos never wrote. Godlike, overall.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three of the best! 6 Sep 2010
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
These three albums are tremendous and to get them for such a low price - you can't beat it! The Bonzos, Zappa and later on Alberto y Lost Trios Paranoias carried on where Spike Jones left off. Wonderful albums, worth the buying just for the `Money' cover.
The album cover was brilliant; I've still got my copy. Sadly the vinyl was wrecked so these cds are a great replacement

And if you liked that why not try this!
Mandrax Sunset Variations.

5.0 out of 5 stars An historical document 14 April 2003
Format:Audio CD
To characterise this music as political, comical satire (which it is) would be to mislead a potential purchaser, because it also has great harmonic beauty, originality and musicality. As someone who has owned every Zappa album, choosing the wheat from the chaff is a difficult job. Editorial discretion was never Zappa's strong point, but among the, what is it? 60-70 releases? there are 10 or so moments of bliss. These 3 (Freak Out, Absolutely Free, Were Only In It For The Money) from the very beginning of Zappas career are extraordinary, and as a collection unsurpassable. Now if they could just compile One Size Fits All, Studio Tan and Broadway The Hardway into a trio I could sell the rest of my Zappa discs for a mighty sum to some sad vinyl junkie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Frank Zappa cannot die! 19 May 2006
Format:Audio CD
Many people write off Frank Zappa as a once-relevant satirist; as any true music fan knows they are wrong. Whilst there are periodical references the true beauty of this collection is Frank's glorious guitar work and the wide scope of sound that the Mothers employ.

You MUST buy this album if you wish to listen to one of the greatest musicians ever.

3.0 out of 5 stars One out of three works for me. 26 Mar 2009
Format:Audio CD
This is highly subjective of course, but, having been a long time Zappa fan, with: Apostrophe ('), Bongo Fury,Uncle Meat,Frank Zappa Threesome No1: (Freakout/ Abs. Free/...in it for the money)
Frank Zappa Threesome No2: (Hot Rats;Waka/Jawaka;The Grand Wazoo),
Over-nite Sensation, Shut up 'n Play Yer Guitar, You are what you is, Zoot Allures, One Size Fits All, Roxy and Elsewhere, Fillmore East, Just another band from LA,You can't do that on the stage vol.2, Guitar, Lather, The Yellow Shark in my CD rack ( and more that I can't be bothered to update anymore), as well as Joe's Garage and some related stuff ( Luc Ponty,Ensemble Modern ) all magnifique, I feel that only one out of these three would I have bought separately had I first heard them , namely the Mothers' 'Freak Out!' ( Google this on Wiki. Fascinating. ) The other two are, subjectively ( a boring qualifier for pedantic sticklers) dated, and not particularly representative of Zappa for concerned young teenagers of today , with but a few bright moments in each. So seriously folks ! Put the money into some of his better ones ! ( unless you already have them all, but are still addicted ). That's my advice. Zappa appeals to different emotions and people at different times, Genius that he is ! So the erudite may think the other CD's in the threesome are sheer musical brilliance. 'Fraid I don't; I'm a bit dumb all over. It's your money, blow it any way you like.... and that's my advice. Why did I come in here anyway. Oh yeah. I was looking for the car keys. You haven't seen them anywhere have you ?....And you ? Oh, OK .Thanks a lot anyway. Support your local anarchist. You know it's the RIGHT THING TO DO.
P.S. I'll probably disagree with this review the next time I listen to these three albums. Oi! Who pinched the other two stars ? Yes. he really is that good. Now go and get scrutinized !
