If you are a fan of Dickens, you should read this book, which adds an extra dimension by examining with a critical eye the amoral capitalist society of the time. You have to have a very dry sense of humour to enjoy it but it is worthwhile. Brecht looks at industries such as banking and retail and lampoons the owners and managers, to hilarious effect. All I know about Brecht is in the introduction of the book, which suggests he was a Communist. If he expected to convert readers against capitalism, he failed spectacularly in my case. I eagerly followed the fortunes of the industrial antiheros, such as Mac the Knife, the murderer-cum-retailer. This is Dickens with extra meat. Recommended.
