Review

'These stories, mini masterpieces of realism and contemplation, examine the arc of humanity in its many forms, revealing through diverse tales of three separate people, the poignant place of dignity, spiritual triumph and the fulfilment of destiny beyond any individual control. These are stories to feed the soul and exercise our moral fibres. Perfect.' --Parent Talk --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

Product Description

Three Tales offers an excellent introduction to the work of one of the world's greatest novelists. A Simple Heart is set in the Normandy of Flaubert's childhood, while Saint Julian and Herodias draw on medieval myth and the biblical story of John the Baptist for their inspiration. Each of the tales invites comparison with one or other of Flaubert's novels, but they also reveal a fresh and distinctive side to the writers's genius. This book is intended for general; students from the Sixth Form upwards following courses on French literature or comparative literature.

These three tales are very different, yet each gives a different slant on sainthood, or how personal redemption can be reached. In 'A Simple Heart' Flaubert tells the touching story of a life given up to quiet, unquestioning service. In the story of St Julien, dramatic suffering and compassion are required to atone for the great suffering caused. The story of John the Baptist is told from the point of view of Herodias with rich sensual imagery, while the saint himself is a shadowy mysterious figure in the background. Flaubert uses three very different narrative styles for these three compelling stories which invite reading and rereading.

My first introduction to Flaubert and I was a little disappointed.

He writes sparsely, and well, but it felt more like a technical exercise than anything else. These stories, oddly given their subject matter, seemed to lack heart. "A Simple Heart", which many think highly of, was a rush through an average servant's life but it left little room for contemplation. "Saint Julian" I enjoyed the most as Flaubert's fleeting style actually suited this sort of pseudo-medieval tale. "Herodias" was probably the weakest, requiring too much historical knowledge and, again, lacking some soul.

So this didn't impress me. Neither as good as those who came before (Balzac) or after him (Maupassant).

wonderful characterisation, addressing the emotive reasoning of the heart and mind, and through 3 novels, Flaubert discusses the innocent simple human being in the sophisticated world that we have created in Simple Heart, the human engaging with life to the fullest and the irony of events disengaging the same human from the world in St Julian the Hospitallier, and finally in Herodias, a momemtal few hours of a particular day when everything colludes towards a gruesome end, revealing a multitude of prior historical events and diverse dysfunctional personnages. A good read and much to ponder on.
