Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

The lyrics "It's about the music, not about the face" hardly represent a breakthrough in political pop theorising. But when the Sugababes sing them on "Whatever Makes You Happy" (the second track on Three, a rather literal title for the group's third album), it's difficult to suspend one's incredulity. After all, while multi-racial dolly mixtures Mutya Buena, Heidi Range and Keisha Buchanan hardly resemble abominable gargolyes, their relatively indignant demeanour (coupled with the lingering durability of classic hits like "Freak Like Me" and "Overload") has been welcomed as an antidote to the abidingly glossy transience of banal girlie pop.

Frankly, the Sugababes are better at making music (with a little cowriting assistance from a coterie of professionals) than pulling faces and "keeping it street". This album, therefore, could have been fatally undermined by getting too dangerous ("Nasty Ghetto" is all hammy, bluesy, back-street melodrama copenned with Linda Perry from 4 Non Blondes) or by such lapses into working-class ingratiation as "Don't wanna spend my time in the VIP / Gotta meet someone who doesn't need publicity". However, the electronic ska of "Hole in the Head", the soothing balladry of "Caught in the Moment" (reminiscent of Neneh Cherry at her most chilled) or the insistent drum loops, ominously squawking melodica and dervish groove of "Situation's Heavy" are powerful enough to sway any cynic while the cheeky R&B of "Buster" (nightclub lothario atttempts to entice some less-than-gullible filly into a cab and back to his pad for the proverbial cappuccino) amuses no end. They'll be back for a fourth album, which is more than can be said for many of their peers. --Kevin Maidment

5.0 out of 5 stars Sugababes prove that their here to stay!, 18 Jun 2004
'Three' is an amazing album from the sugababes. I cannot stop listening to it. Hole in the head was a really catchy tune and then we had too lost- the soundtrack to the film love actually, too lost makes me want to both cry and cheer up when i'm listening to it. The sugababes prove that they can combine different styles of songs and make great records and not forgetting the single 'in the middle' which again is another winner with pop and catchy beats to it.

I hope that the following albums that the Sugababes produce is as good as this one- 'three,' I will rate this 10 out of 10 and i really recommend this album to all.

5.0 out of 5 stars TOO LOST IN THIS, 19 Dec 2003
By "tomkatz4" - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
The latest offering from the Sugababes, 'Three', is a surprisingly perfect piece of pop. The girls go from strength to strength, starting off with smash number one 'Hole In The Head', an insanely catchy piece of electro dance-pop which propelled them back into the public consciousness. And latest single, 'Too Lost In You', from the Love Actually soundtrack, is without a doubt the best single they have ever released. Keisha Buchanan's vocals shine on this ballad penned by ballad-queen Diane Warren.
However, unlike many artists, it isn't just the good songs that are pencilled in for a release date. Virtually every song on this album is magnificent, with only a couple of duds.
The duds - 'Buster' and 'Sometimes' - feel very much like album fillers, and the fourteen track album would still have worked just as well with twelve tracks.
Anyways, enough of the nitpicking. The album starts of with 'Hole In The Head', progressing to 'Whatever Makes You Happy', a slightly rocky offering reminiscent of 'Freak Like Me'. Ballad 'Caught In A Moment' gives 'Too Lost In You' a run for its money, but is a much more relaxed affair, less intense, and a potential single.
'Situation's Heavy' isn't great to be honest, sometimes it sounds good, sometimes it sounds bad. 'Million Different Ways' is a bhangra-tinged song, showing just how hip Keisha, Heidi Range and pierced princess Mutya Buena are. 'Twisted' is a pretty perky pop song, hypnotic, and then it is followed by 'We Could Have It All', which sounds kinda like 'Whatever Makes You Happy', but slightly less accomplished.
'Conversation's Over' and 'In The Middle'are two of the best songs on the album but both very different. The first out of the two is a moody song which builds up, and 'In The Middle' is the standout upbeat song on the album, absolutely fantastic.
Then comes 'Too Lost In You' which is brilliant, followed by 'Nasty Ghetto', a real grower of a song spiked with attitude. The two duds follow this, but the album is renewed with it's final song 'Maya', a haunting, beautiful song dedicated to Mutya's cousin. It really makes you think, not your average song of any genre.
Overall, Mutya, Keisha and Heidi have come out on top with their third album, better than anything they have released yet, and this shows they'll be around for at least another album. : )

5.0 out of 5 stars What an amazing album!, 5 Nov 2003
By A Customer
This album is totally amazing. Its hard to believe the girls are still under 20 years old. Listen to this and you will be blown away guranteed.

Hole in the Head: A great song to open the album to, I love the chorus its great to sing along too. This song was based on an experience Keisha had with a guy.

Whatever makes you happy: Much rockier then their normal style which should mean they will gain new fans if they release this as a single. You cant not like this track.

Caught in a moment: Wow, an amazing ballad. Heidi's voice sounds fantastic on this song and the lyrics are very clever. Definitely one of my favourites on the album.

Situations heavy: A song you would expect from the sugababes funky and sassy with that unique sugababes sound. Its pure class.

Million different ways: This track shows the girls experimenting with a bhangra sound and it really does work. All of the girls sound amazing. Another favourite of mine.

Twisted: The title makes you think its going to be quite a dark and rocky song but in fact it reminds me a bit of the grange hill theme tune its one of the more poppier songs on the album.

We could have it all: Another quite rocky and dark song. I love the chorus on this song and I think it will appeal to everyone.

Conversations over: Keishas voice stands out on this song. I think a lot of people can relate to it. Its a girl power song without being too in your face.

In the middle: This is a song that I would not expect from the sugababes as its extermly pop sounding.
However its definitely a party track and will get everyone dancing.

Too lost in you: Their next single and its the stand out track on the album in my opinion.
The girls sing it with so much emotion and you really believe what they are singing.
Definitely a christmas number 1 contender.

Nasty Ghetto: Takes a while to like but its very cool. Its here that you can see the sugababes are trying to make their songs more mature.

Buster:Reminds me a bit of "Just dont need" this from angels. Its kind of along the same theme about an unwanted guy coming onto them.
Very cool and again a song people can relate to.

Sometimes: Quite a depressing song but Heidi stands out on it like she does on most of the songs on the album.
Not a bad song at all.

Maya: Quite a nice song to end the album to and the song makes you think as well!

Overall the album is fantastic. Heidi definitely makes the album her voice is amazing.
