Classical Soviet School Master-Making 2 Aug 2009
By Andre E. Harding - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book was not easy to obtain, but I'm glad I was able to find it. Suetin shows his class as a trainer and provides a lot of food for thought, giving the player directions in which to improve their game. He examines games at critical points and discusses the decision-making process, whether it involves calculation or strategic planning.

I should clarify one thing that I didn't see mentioned anywhere before I got the book and read the introduction: when the book talks about "Mastery," it is referring to Soviet Master level. A footnote in the book says that this is approximately 2360 Elo (almost IM level!). By USCF standards we're not talking about Master, but about Senior Master! I was happy about this development however, since I was still able to follow the book and learn some things (I'm rated 2001 USCF, 1988 Elo).

The author doesn't hold your hand, but a strong player can glean some wisdom from this book. The three parts are:

Part I: The Chess Player's Laboratory
Part II: Work On The Elimination Of One's Shortcomings, And Other Problems Of Self-Improvement
Part III: The Master Level

Within these three parts, there are many short subsections that can be studied and digested in small chunks, since they are typically 2 or 3 pages long (the book has a double column format, so that's still a reasonable amount of material). In fact, Three Steps to Chess Mastery reminded me of a Dvoretsky/Yusupov book, only with MUCH shorter sections, making the material far easier to absorb in a study session.

Conclusions: (1) If you like the Dvoretsky/Yusupov series from the 1990s (or the revised series by Edition Olms), you should go to great lengths to get this book as you are sure to enjoy and learn from it. Suetin's book is easier than those, but I personally know 2400+ players who have to study D/Y very slowly to benefit. I like their stuff too, but I can only study one section at a time since it is so "heavy." (2) If you are 1800 or above you can tackle this book, or at least parts of it. Players 1500-1800 may not appreciate some of Suetin's subtlety, but it won't hurt them to have a look. Below 1500, I wouldn't study this book yet.

This book is useful for advance players. 19 July 2002
By "logen" - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Ok,
You must be at least 1500 and above to understand this book.

This book consists of several parts which will tell how to be a master.

The book are a bit old but really a useful one.

Former world champion wrote the book .

Advance players will love it.

Well,it's pity the book is out of sale. But try to have it.

I will give a 5 stars but some parts are hard to understand and some are out-dated.
