Product Description

Dan and Adam have always been close. In fact, they’ve been closer than Adam could ever guess. And if Dan’s going to get that close again, it will take time. It will take research. It may even take practice. Fortunately, Dan is a very patient person – and Adam trusts him. With his house key. With his secrets. With his wife…

But as Dan gets closer, someone is watching. Someone who will stop at nothing to uncover the truth… and seek revenge.

It’s only a matter of time before danger steps out of the shadows. Dan has his sight fixed on the future; perhaps he should have kept one eye on what lay behind?

This chilling psychological thriller from the author of Yours is Mine explores love, obsession, and betrayal, and asks: can we ever really know another person?

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! 15 May 2014

I have recently started really enjoying thrillers so when Amy contacted me to ask if I wanted to review Three Steps Behind You I jumped at the chance. Let me tell you something though, this book is not just a normal thriller it is something much much more! It is like nothing I have ever read before, it has such a different story line and concept that it makes it unputdownable! It keeps you guessing all the way through, there are so many twists and turns but it makes the book so much more interesting! I will warn you though this book is not for the faint hearted!

The great thing about this book is that although you shouldn't like Dan you just can’t help it, this is purely because of the way Amy has written him, Dan is a strange stalker type character, who is in love with his best friend Adam, so it feels wrong to like him, but it isn't in a nice way that you do, it is because he is truly fascinating and you can’t wait to find out what he will do next.

The plot follows Dan and his strange, creepy, obsessional thoughts and actions, which he does because he strongly believes in method acting and applies that concept to writing his book. He creates an alter ego, Luke, to play out his thoughts and fantasies so that he can then incorporate them into his book. In a way I think Dan could be classed as slightly Schizophrenic just because of how easily he seems to change between himself and Luke, and it seems like it is uncontrollable. It is a great book to explain the thoughts and actions of somebody with an unstable mind.

I would definitely recommend this to anybody that likes a dark read. I absolutely loved this book, the whole concept and story was fascinating. There are creepy, fascinating and funny moments in this book, which are all written brilliantly by Amy. I finished it in 2 days because I just couldn't put it down! I am now definitely going to read her first novel ‘Yours Is Mine’.

This is the first book in a very long time that I have managed to 'consume' in one evening/night and that is credit to the good writing and gripping story that unfolds in Amy Bird's 'Three Steps Behind You'. It is a riveting story that submerges you into the inner (somewhat perverse) psyche of Dan, whilst also allowing you to second guess the motives and agenda of the other characters. However, the faint-hearted beware: there are clear violent and sexual themes throughout which some readers 'may find disturbing' (or, for those of stronger mettle, a bit unsettling). Despite this, it was an enthralling read which will keep you thinking about the characters and their actions for days after you have finished reading; I quite literally did not want to put it down!

4.0 out of 5 stars Compulsive 27 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I got quite drawn into it, looking forward to my daily installment and finished it pretty quickly. Started thinking it was very dark but once I got accustomed to the utter obsession of the main protaganist I found it more fascinating than disturbing. The author does a good job of explaining why he is like he is and there is also considerable humour to be found throughout the narrative. Builds nicely to a gripping climax and an ending that is more realistic than reassuring.

I really enjoyed reading Amy Bird's second book. Very different in style to her first one and reflected her range of skills as a writer
Particularly liked the way it left you thinking about the different characters, the role they played and responsibilities!
Looking forward to the next one

4.0 out of 5 stars Three Steps Behind You 5 Aug 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I received an advanced copy of this book in return for an honest review.

After reading Amy Bird's previous book, Yours is Mine, I was excited to see how she could follow it up. I was surprised to find that it was a completely different type of story and even more intrigued to find her writing from a male point of view. It worked very well for me although I did find it difficult to get into the very strange thought processes of our narrator.

I am glad I stuck it out, as the story takes a very dark and murderous turn and leaves the reader totally in the dark as to who is the real victim.

I will certainly be watching out for more from Amy Bird.

5.0 out of 5 stars By turns fascinating and disturbing 17 Jun 2014

Amy Bird has created an impressive image of obsession, by turns fascinating and disturbing. The final few chapters flew by in a blur as I willed the tube not to reach my destination until the story was complete. Altogether a much more challenging novel, for both the author and the reader, than her debut, but I think also more rewarding. I look forward to her third book. Or is it the fourth?

3.0 out of 5 stars Creepy! 8 Jun 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I found the book engaging enough that I wanted to find out what happened at the end. However, the obsessional theme is really creepy, and without giving anything away, the ending was just horrible. The character Dan is something else, although Adam has a few surprises of his own. Read the book as part of a book club, but not really one I'd recommend to a friend.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding! 9 May 2014

I have read my fair share of books and psychological thrillers but this is something else!

I was completely and utterly hooked from the first few pages and not once did this book let down with the suspense and intricacies. I kept on changing my mind about the different characters, their motives, their ways of thinking, and especially towards the last few chapters I simply could not put the book down. And when I say that, I mean I was cooking dinner, stirring food with one hand and holding my Kindle with the other. And walking to work whilst reading the book!

The characters are incredibly intriguing and just as you expect, they don't quite turn out the way you thought they would.

This is definitely one of the best books I have ever read and I'll be looking out for more of Amy Bird's books now.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
