5.0 out of 5 stars Solid, good stuff, 3 April 2007
By Rolf Lindgren "roffe" (Oslo, Norway) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I am not an expert on Freud or Rogers. I am, however, well read in behavior analysis, and well aquainted with the fact that most contemporary critiques are based on misunderstadnings from secondary sources. Refreshing, then, to read a study by somebody who actually knows.

Nye is sometimes a bit too clever for my taste. I don't always agree with his judgements, for example, I think sometimes he misunderstands on purpose by giving the same meaning to the same word used in different contexts. For example, he asserts that Skinner represses when he claims that there was no sibling rivalry between him and his brother, when in fact the counterexamples he describes may well be interpreted in many ways. The examples Nye gives from Skinner's childhood and many of the calls he makes, provide insights into the way behaviorism came to be under Skinner that come close to profound.

I disagree with what I assume to be an underlying assumption: that if a scientific discovery can be traced back to some sinister childhood happening, then that belittles the discovery somehow. Rather, it can be claimed that fortunate for the world, early childhood trauma sent Skinner on the path of reflection that allowed him to make the discoveries he did. Newton's mechanics were, after all, not merely about predicting when ripe apples would fall to take the tediousness out of harvesting them.

Be that as it may, if the other two chapters are as factually correct as that about Skinner, then this volume is a treasure trove of provocative insigths.
