As the earlier review states, the documentary at the start of the concert does get annoying. This is especially so because it's actually placed OVER songs from the concert. Plus, there's no option to change to another angle or change the audio source to cut it out either. Now, for the actual concert itself.

Doc Watson is, unfortunately, not as his best here. He sure gives it a good go, but we see none of the fast licks or solos that maybe we'd expect from a guitarist of his calibre and reputation. It's mostly chords or slow melodies from him. Earl Scruggs is as good as ever, and he can still pick his banjo really well. Ricky Skaggs is also good in this. Not quite at his best, but he puts on a good show and his personality really shines through.

As for the songs, there's a mix of slow and fast bluegrass tunes, all with different feelings to them. Personally I didn't find much of the slower, mountain-style stuff to my liking, but some might. As for guests, Alison Krauss makes an appearance for a few songs, as do Kentucky Thunder (Ricky's band), and quite a few more good musicians. It's maybe a shame that they don't all play together for more of the DVD, but then it is the -three- pickers.

Overall, it's worth watching once or twice, just so you can say you've seen it, but it's not one you'll want to return to again and again. The good songs outweigh the bad, but I'm still frustrated about the documentary covering a very good instrumental or two at the start.

I am so angry. One hour of concert we are promised, and guess what it starts off interspersed with commentary for about ten minutes. When will they realise this is not what we want! Would the people that put these dvd's together listen to their favourite cd's with commentary on telling them what a nice bloke someone is. Still it does open out in to a good dvd of some of the best pickers ever. Concert should be a concert though. By all means have a documentary but please.
