I'm a Rorem fan and I was happy to get this for Christmas. I put on this recording along with some Ginastera and David Lang and my family enjoyed Rorem's music the best. Each sonata is great, even the one that is "more modern". I would describe the music as "fancy", but it isn't too fancy of course. It actually sounded British to me and reminded me of York Bowen's piano works, of course Rorem and others say otherwise (French, Poulenc influenced). I will definitely get the next Rorem/Lanners recording when it comes out. If you are new to Ned Rorem, this is a great recording to start with (unless you love vocal songs, then check those out). People need to listen and play Rorem more often!

At long last, Rorem's piano music is getting recorded! All three of these sonatas are worth listening to and they are beautifully played by Lanners. I've read that he'll be recording the rest of Rorem's piano output at a later date and I'm eagerly awaiting the results!

This is an incredible performance by Lanners. My family enjoys listening to this very frequently and would recommend this for anyone who loves beautiful music. Lanners' piano playing is immense and powerful. At the same time though, he can be smooth and meaningful. Rorem is great and the recording is great too!
