Product Description

Synopsis

The SCOTNOTES booklets are a series of study guides to major Scottish writers and texts frequently used within literature courses, aimed at senior secondary school pupils and students in further education. The individual authors are not only experts on a particular writer or text but also experienced in teaching at the relevant level in schools or colleges. For many years there has been a shortage of readily accessible critical notes for the general student of Scottish literature; SCOTNOTES provide the ideal resource for this increasingly popular field of study.

I bought this book to help me through my English SQA Higher exam - especially the 'personal study' section, in which I had chosen Banks' masterpiece, 'The Crow Road'. The Scotnotes book is quite helpful, pointing out twists in the plot and highlighting key themes - which increase the reader's overall understanding of the story. This will, in turn, ease the harrowing task of critically evaluating the novel.

Each of the three novels are covered in turn, with each section opening with a short introduction to the novel's background. A brief synopsis of the text follows, before branching out into topics such as 'Settings', 'Characters', 'Themes' and details about major factors within the story - for example, in 'The Crow Road' section, there is a topic entitled 'A Saga of Three Families', which details exactly who is who within the sprawling web of characters.

There will be some points covered which you feel are stating the obvious, but most of the text is useful, relevant, and most importantly, easy to understand. So if you've chosen to study either of the texts, this book will help you in some way.

Unfortunately, misunderstood, thought i was getting three complete novels, not a writers summary of the three books, therefore returned this copy, but have purchased full copies of the novels.

I too thought that I was getting a big fat book containing 3 novels. When I saw the slim envelope I couldn't figure out what was in it. After opening it I felt really ripped off. Of course you can argue that one should know what "Scotnotes" is or should read more of the description of the item.

However, I think Amazon should note very clearly when the title of the book is not an accurate description of the product.
