I bought this book to help me through my English SQA Higher exam - especially the 'personal study' section, in which I had chosen Banks' masterpiece, 'The Crow Road'. The Scotnotes book is quite helpful, pointing out twists in the plot and highlighting key themes - which increase the reader's overall understanding of the story. This will, in turn, ease the harrowing task of critically evaluating the novel.
Each of the three novels are covered in turn, with each section opening with a short introduction to the novel's background. A brief synopsis of the text follows, before branching out into topics such as 'Settings', 'Characters', 'Themes' and details about major factors within the story - for example, in 'The Crow Road' section, there is a topic entitled 'A Saga of Three Families', which details exactly who is who within the sprawling web of characters.
There will be some points covered which you feel are stating the obvious, but most of the text is useful, relevant, and most importantly, easy to understand. So if you've chosen to study either of the texts, this book will help you in some way.
