Format:Audio CD
I nearly didn't buy this because of the other review but we already had Jack and Beanstalk, also read by Lenny Henry and Sheridan Smith, and our 3 year old twins loved it so decided to take the plunge. I'm glad I did as this is very funny - the three little pigs have black country accents with a few jokes thrown in (won't spoil them for you) and the granny in Little Red Riding Hood is a Scouser!
I agree with the reviewer in that it wouldn't have done any harm to slow down the reading a notch more - it is aimed at toddlers and pre-schoolers after all - but there is no mention of the humour injected into these readings, which makes it enjoyable for us adults and for the kids. The proof of the pudding is in the playing and it has been the only CD we have been allowed to play in the car since we got it!

Great stories, sadly Mr Henry didn't have a lot of time to spend in the recording studio and whizzes through. I hoped for better, am sadly disappointed. Straight to the charity shop or car boot sale with this one.

I was really shocked at these stories, they're classic stories that all children read and have read to them during their childhood. However, I wouldn't choose these versions for the age group that this audio CD is aimed at.
The three little pigs - this is not the version where the little pigs run to the next house, this is the version where the wolf "gobbles them up" and "ate them". The wolf also doesn't just land on the boiling water, he gets cooked in the boiling water because the pig puts the lid on to trap him inside.
Hansel and Gretel - This charming story has a witch who very nearly eats the children and who locks Hansel in a cage for weeks to fatten him up. Then Gretel tricks her into climbing into the oven and it's graphically described as the witch screamed as she was burned and roasted in the oven, and then it happily declares - whilst the children are singing and dancing round the house - that yippee the witch is dead.
Little Red Riding Hood - This one isn't too bad, but little red riding hood actually gets eaten rather than calling for help. The woodcutter cuts open the wolfs stomach while he's sleeping and 'rescues' grandma and little red riding hood, then fills his stomach with stones so he can drown him later! He sews the wolfs stomach up and then all three of them taunt him until they finally manage to lure him into the stream where he drowns and dies.
Sleeping Beauty - This story was fine, she has fairies grant her wishes celebrating her birth, the evil fairy declares that she will die on her 16th birthday, another fairy changes this to sleep for 100 years, she gets pricked on her 16th birthday and then 100 years later her true love wakes her, and they live happily ever after!
I wouldn't advise letting children under the age of at least 10, more likely 12 to listen to this. Completely sends out the wrong message, don't get me wrong, I know all fairy tales have a little bit of evil in them, but they have been adapted and changed for younger listeners and better versions could have been used for this audio CD.

Three little pigs.
Only one story was listed., so didn't know what else was on cd until after purchase. Did not like the other stories. would be more useful if all stories were listed.

Nice CD, but my son isn't interested
We've tried playing this CD to my son a few times, but he's just not interested. It's a shame as I think the stories are well told.

A good CD for long car journeys.
So far I've only heard the first story on the CD, which is The 3 Pigs. It's well told, detailed and quite lengthy (about 15 minutes I think). Read more
