4.0 out of 5 stars Intelligent, vivid and thrilling 5 Dec 2008
By J.K. Currie VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Why write a review of a long forgotten and out of print novel from the 1950s? Because it is a superior example of the historical fiction genre and can still be obtained at very low prices. If you enjoyed novels such as Wallace Breem's 'Eagle in the Snow', to which this book has many similarities, you will without doubt enjoy 'The Three Legions'. Concerned with the disaster which struck Augustus' plans to add Germany to the Roman Empire, it tells how the entire Roman army in Germany was ambushed and destroyed in the Teutoburg Forest by the Romanised German Arminius. The novel is an intelligent slow burner to begin with as it builds up the characters serving at the various levels of the Roman army, but culminates in a thrilling and convincing account of the final disaster. Invest a few pounds in this and you will not be disappointed.

Lots of excitement and another page turner and hard to put down book. A tale about a very famous or infamous event in the history of Rome and, one that Solon tells with an interesting narrative. This book was an enjoyable quick read and I recommend it to anyone fascinated with Roman military history.
