5.0 out of 5 stars I read this book in less than 48 hours!! 4 Sep 2002
Format:Paperback
I can sum the hilarity, brutal honesty and story-line of this book up in 2 words....."absolutely brilliant"!! From the moment I picked it up I was hooked. Completely.
Bella is an attractive city-slicker. She is human; she drinks, eats, smokes and loves risque situations in risque places! At the same time she wants a baby....but forgot to tell her 'very-happily-married-minus-children' husband!
Bella captured my heart completely. Whether you have kids, want kids, are single, married, had a nightmare delivery in pregnancy or sailed through the 'Piles' and stitches you will scream with laughter with this brilliant character who I desperately hope visits my book shelf again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining...but still fiction 28 Feb 2006
Format:Paperback
I'm glad I read this book once I was a mother, not before!!! There is a lot of well-described, harsh reality of pregnancy, relationships and motherhood. Once you're a mum you can laugh and enjoy it but I'd imagine it'd scare the life out of me beforehand!
What I didn't like was the underlying message (I suppose for fiction/entertainment) that everything can fall apart and until the mother gets her act together, the little family can't work.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good I wrote to the author!! 27 July 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
I found this book to be absolutely brilliant - so good that I wrote to the author to tell her so - something I have never done before and can't see me ever doing again (unless she writes another one!).
Perhaps the reason this book has made such a strong impact on me is the way in which the main character, Bella, reacted to motherhood - it totally mirrored my own experience. It was as though I had written it myself, albeit for the fact that I wouldn't have been able to tell it in such a frank, honest and meaningful way.
Carmen Reid's style of writing is definately not for the faint-hearted, but she is an absolute GENIUS and I can't wait for her next novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars three in a bed 8 Nov 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
The subject of this book obviously stems partly from the heart and partly down to a lot of good research. The text on labour was spot on and the whole book entertaining from start to finish. Packed with female hormones from cover to cover!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly modern heroine 1 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
As I am have not yet braved the world of motherhood I thought this book would be a bit full of cracked nipples for my liking. How wrong I was. Carmen's writing style is so frank and downright funny that I was sucked (pardon the pun) in from the word go. Never before have I been so eager to go to my bed early, in order to find out what the main character, Bella could possibly get up to next. Carmen may have put me off childbirth for life but with a book like this I'll forgive her.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not for the squeamish! 20 Jan 2003
Format:Paperback
I wouldn't normally read this type of novel, but I have finished this in less than 2 days. I've been feeling ill and this book cheered me up!
The first few chapters were quite boring to read, I didn't identify with any of the characters and there must have been at least 2 sex scenes per chapter, which were unnecessary.
I stuck with it and I'm glad that I did, as once the main character (Bella) had become pregnant the story became a lot more interesting.
A friend of mine who has 3 young boys leant me this book, perhaps she was thinking it might make me feel broody?! In fact it did the opposite, the graphic childbirth scene and description of bodily functions afterwards was enough to put anyone off! However, I'm sure this is what it is really like to be pregnant and have a young baby to look after.
As I don't normally read this type of novel I can't compare it with others, but overall it was well written and I would recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best two days reading I've ever had 12 Mar 2004
Format:Paperback
This is an extraordinary book that will keep twenty something reading! I don't read a great deal of books but I have told all the people that I know to read it as it is a great book. The author is fantastic and keeps it real and easy reading. I had to get away from work early yesterday, to get to the bookshop for the next novel. That is how good it is!

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 22 Oct 2002
Format:Paperback
This book was one of the best I have read for some time - I couldn't put it down.
Being a working mother myself I could totally relate to the sharp sassy character of Bella. I laughed out loud at the portrayal of child birth, personal details of which I had conveniently forgotten.
For me this book was about underlining the fact that women can have it all but at the end of the day they have to make choices to remain sane!
