Alice Thomas Ellis always liked to describe herself as a housewife, but reading her 'Home Life' books, the life she led seemed to me to be considerably more exciting than the life of the average housewife, or the average anyone come to that.
Astonishing things always seemed to happen to her. This book is full of extraordinary experiences, like the time she caught a nine-year-old burglar in her house, and he became a lifelong friend, or the mysterious breathing she and her guests heard in the garden of her cottage in Wales. And even when she is doing something ordinary like cooking or cleaning, she somehow manages to make it seem fascinating. Her life seemed to be full of colourful and eccentric characters, whether family, or friends, or just passing tramps. Whether she was in Camden Town or in Wales, there always seemed to be something going on.
The 'Home Life' saga is still as amusing as it was 20 years ago, and well worth revisiting.
