This is a subtle yet terrifying mix of Korean, Japanese and Hong Kong horror. The film is split into three 40 minute segments starting with "Dumplings". Unlike the others, I was not familiar with Fruit Chan's films, and this is my first. I have seen the full version, and I must admit being absolutely horrified when I first watched this, I think it's truly brilliant. The second segment is "Cut" by Park Wook-Chan, who is known for his vengence trilogy, of which I have seen the latter two. I really enjoyed these, but I was somewhat disappointed with "Cut", its an odd tale, more thriller than horror, and has a subtle twist at the end which I quite like. I think this is similar to his other films, where the ending do have these twists which are unexpected! The final segment from Takashi Miike is called "Box" which is truly bizzare. Its much slower than the other seqments and is lacking in dialogue, its a much more visual experience. Again it wasn't bad just not brilliant.

Overall, an interesting collection of films, I would however, recommend watching the full version of "Dumplings" as this is a truly horrifying experience! Worth a peek!

This trilogy of shorts comprises Dumplings, Cut and Box.
Dumplings indicates the lengths to which human vanity will drive women in an attempt to remain young. The quality of the sound production, precise, delicate and suggestive, together with superb photography make this the best and most coherent of the 3.
Cut is either about a disaffected film extra's desire for revenge, or the 2 halves of a director's personality vying for control - either work!
Box once more uses beautiful photography and a tragic back story to inform a haunting, with a typically Asian strange ending (I love these!).
Nothing like your average Hollywood shockers, enough gore for the 'gorehounds' but no good if you're not prepared to use your brain.

Very shocking, very gruesome, very good acting. Very good! But it's not for the squeamish, easily shocked or offended. Don't watch if you have children as it will upset you. To create realistic-looking scenes like they have in this film, and to induce a feeling of disgust and shock in a viewer, to make a viewer feel that strongly and even a little outraged with one or two of the scenes - yet what happened is fictional and not real, yet they've made it look very believable - is an art. Very few films have moved me like this one, shocked me, and got me to watch every single second as your eyes won't believe what they are seeing, it's that unnerving. Yet you have to continue watching to see what happens next; it's that intriguing.
