Product Description

Review

Egholm is a better storyteller than most other female crime writers ... It's thrilling and brutal (Ekstra Bladet)

Add to this the supple language and the evocative descriptions of beauty as well as ugliness on Djursland, and the result is a highly recommended, bleak and captivating crime novel (Information)

Both plot and characters go full throttle ... How it all connects is both surprising and imaginative (Politiken)

The story is captivating and well told. The book has some cleverly turned twists in a focused narrative where the expected truths emerge during the dramatical final stand-off (metroXpress)

5.0 out of 5 stars Three Dog Night 26 Nov 2013
By R. Gardner VINE VOICE
Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
This is one of the best books I've read in ages. Some that I have had recently just seemed contrived or written to a formula. Not this the story line flows and you feel that you could be part of it. The main character is fascinating man with a slight mystery in his past, the story involves a murder with unusual circumstances, there are needless to say some twists and turns, but not contrived ones, all part of the story. Set in Denmark and written by an author I hadn't heard off before. similar in feeling to 'the Killing' and 'the Bridge' The authors from the Scandinavian countries have a pace and feeling that others don't seem to be able to copy. The story line is tight and there things happening all the time, a lot of them totally unexpected. Apart from the main man there are several others that weave in and out as the story progresses.
A thoroughly good read and I cannot recommend it more highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three Dog Night 20 Aug 2013

Format:Hardcover|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Author Elsebeth Egholm is a bestselling Danish author and this is the first of her books translated into English. Often novels translated for the UK market tend to be published out of series order, but the blurb on the back of this book said it was "the start of a thrilling new crime series featuring ex-convict Peter Boutrup" and it certainly read like a first novel (introducing characters and places), so I am hopeful that the publishers have taken note of readers wishes for once.

Set in the small town of Grena in East Jutland, Denmark, this book is set in the middle of a freezing winter - and having experienced winter in Denmark that is very cold indeed. The novel begins on New Years Eve, with Peter Boutrup returning from a party. Having recently been released from prison, he is endeavouring to get his life back to normal - working for builder Manfred, living in his tiny house with his dog and only his reclusive new neighbour Felix (Felicia) nearby, and enjoying his hobbies of reading and painting. Intruding into his new peace comes ex-con Stinger, an old face from Horsens Prison. Stinger was meant to be meeting up with Ramses; the two plotting to finding the stash of a drug smuggler who died in prison. Then, Stinger goes missing and Peter's dog finds the body of Ramses on the beach. The same night a local girl goes missing on her way home from a party and, before long, any hope of a peaceful new life has been put on hold.

This is a novel with many characters; Peter and Felix, who are thrown together to try to solve the mystery, Mark Billie Hansen, the head of the East Jutland Police, relocated to a rural area after eight years in Copenhagen, his old lover and superior Anna Bagger and diver Kir among them.

I really enjoyed this book, which is set in Jutland, Denmark. The characters are well put together, the plot moves with a tremendous sense of pace and new elements of the plot seem to suggest themselves, rather than get pushed on you.

It’s a tale of redemption – up to a point – and they can be a little predictable. But there’s enough other stuff going on for you to discount any concerns you might have of this being in any way clichéd.

An ex-convict, following the straight and narrow, finds himself dragged back toward the life he hoped to escape, following a series of seeming unconnected events – a young woman goes missing, the body of a fellow inmate gets washed ashore, and a mysterious neighbour with secrets she is running from.

4.0 out of 5 stars Recommended. Danish thriller with a difference 24 Feb 2014

Gripping and well written tale, seen from the point of view of an ex prisoner just looking for a quiet life but trapped by his past. Will look for more from this author, hopefully with the same likeable central character.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPER READ 1 Feb 2014

I really enjoyed this story. Complex characters, variety and clever description eg the search for bodies in chilling water, dense with decayed fish. Cold and bitterness, with some hope of redemption for the main characters.

I love Scandinavian crime novels. There's something about the sparse, cold landscapes and the apparently well-ordered Scandinavian societies which makes a perfect backdrop for crime fiction. This novel, the first in a series by Danish writer Elsebeth Egholm is a very good addition to the genre. You can really feel the cold here! It's never going to be good news when a body is found at the bottom of some cliffs turns out to have connections with Peter Botrup who is quietly trying to rebuild his life after time spent in prison. To make things worse, a young girl goes missing at the same time, and Botrup finds himself trying to figure out what has happened. It is an interesting twist to have an ex-convict turn investigator, and Botrup's character has sufficient complexity to sustain interest for other books in the series. The police officers involved in the investigation are quite well-drawn, and I found the descriptions of the Danish cold particularly evocative. If you enjoy Scandinavian crime, then this is definitely one to try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three Dog Night 10 Sep 2013
By Keen Reader TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Peter Boutrup is just out of prison, and wants to start to live a quiet, unnoticed life in his rural Denmark house, working as a carpenter and minding his own business. When somone he once knew from prison is found dead at the foot of the cliff outside his house, it seems like bad news. When a young girl goes missing on New Years' Eve, bad news seems to be following Peter. Peter finds himself involved without wanting to be not only with all that, but also with his enigmatic neighbour, a young woman named Felix.

This book has it all; criminals, ex-criminals, bitter cynical policemen, murder, mystery and mayhem galore. It's all set in the wonderfully chilly setting of a Denmark winter. Oh, and if you're wondering what a "three dog night" is - it's explained within the first few pages of the book, which was a relief to me, because I did find it an odd expression!

This is an absolutely fantastic book; it kept me gripped from the first page, and I couldn't wait to get back to it and read it every opportunity. The action is tight, the characters well drawn, the pacing brilliant, and there are twists and turns every step of the way. Absolutely top-notch; I hope more of the author's works are translated into English for keen fans.
