I commented on one of the other reviews that they were not really helpful. But I bought the book anyway. It is a gorgeous book, beautifully photographed, very readable and absolutely crammed with inspiration.
If you have any interest at all in manipulating fabric, thread and wire into fascinating shapes and vessels, boxes and beads, this is the book to inspire you to get on with it. Janet Edmonds starts with light and airy drawings of natural objects, then shows how they can be developed into three-dimensional sculptures. More art objects than crafts. She shows how to bind, pleat, tuck and 'stitch' fabric, how to use wire and beads, soluble and heat-sensitive fabrics.
It is a treasure chest of ideas. There is very little 'conventional' sewing (machine sewing seams etc), and no formal patterns. Instructions are general rather than step-by-step, but the free-formed, organic objects are pretty well self-explanatory and will inspire you to try your own thing rather than slavishly reproduce the things shown. Best of all there is no mention of the commercial products that most books tell you you must have. I love it! Now I must go and root in my stash and maybe try one of those boxes...
