Most Helpful Customer Reviews

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful By Barry McCanna TOP 100 REVIEWER on 7 Mar 2012
Format: Audio CD
The first CD presents the veteran New Orleans born trumpeter in company with Kid Ory & his Creole Jazz Band in two LPs from July 1959, when the line-up comprised Bob McCracken on clarinet, Cedric Haywood on piano, Frank Haggerty on guitar, Charles Oden on bass, and Alton Redd on drums. The second CD ends with three tracks from the Newport Jazz Festival which were recorded the same month, when Red's companions were J C Higginbotham on trombone, Buster Bailey on clarinet, Kenny Burrell on guitar, Sammy Price on piano, Lloyd Trotman on bass and Rufus "Speedy" Jones on drums. Before that's reached, there's the album "Red Allen plays King Oliver" from November 1960, with Herb Flemming on trombone, Buster Bailey on clarinet, Milt Hilton on bass, Sol Hall on drums, and Bob Hammer on piano for all but two tracks, where Sammy Price is present instead.

The two Ory albums preceded the band's visit to Great Britain later that year, an unforgettable experience for those (myself included) who saw and heard them. Allen's strong lead and Ory's tailgate trombone produce a dynamic front line, and the rhythm section is quite superb. The whole disc is a celebration of the music which the main participants had been playing for upwards of four decades. Red Allen was at the height of his powers in the mid-fifties, as he demonstrates on the King Oliver album. It's not apparent whose idea it was to dedicate the album to Oliver, because Allen was too much his own man to imitate the King, and the titles aren't those you'd associate first with Oliver. But no matter because the end result was an outstanding success.

Compare Red in a supporting role to the great Kid Ory and in a leading role with a band under his his own name

Plenty of tracks for your money. A good selction of various Red Allen, both fronting his own band and playing with others.
