Once again those lovely people at Avid have come up with another cracker from the 1950s. The first CD kicks off with the Art Blakey Big Band session. The original CD has been un-available for some time unless one was prepared to pay a grossly inflated price. Of the eight tracks it should be noted that two are by a quintet formed by band members featuring John Coltrane and Donald Byrd. The band itself is an all star affair and, apart from Coltrane and Byrd, features solos from Bill Hardman,Ray Copeland, Sahib Shihab and several others. A superb session enhaced by the always interesting Coltrane. Next up is the Jazz Messengers album "Hard Drive" recorded in October 1957 and featuring Johnny Griffin and Bill Hardman. This moved away from the usual bop orientated output of the group in having a distinctly gospel feel in places. I was not too familiar with the work of Hardman and thoroughly enjoyed his solos the first of which included a quote from "Wade In The Water", one of Griffin's more famous outings. Needless to say Griffin is first rate as is pianist Junior Mance.
CD 2 opens with one of my all time favourite Blakey sessions namely the April 1956 Messenger session featuring Donald Byrd, Hank Mobley and the wonderful Horace Silver who contributes two tunes namely "Nica's Dream" and "Ecaroh". The first of these is one of the highlights of the collection with its recurring undrlying theme. The final three tracks are from the 1959 Newport Jazz Festival and run for an average of ten minutes each. They are typical festival fare and, to my mind, not essential listening.
