Book Description

25 Sep 2002 Mccabes 101 Series
You need only minimal playing skills and three chords--G, C, and D7--to accompany all the great songs in this innovative book. If you are just getting started, or if you are a ""casual"" player on a chording instrument, this is the perfect book for you. The book is absolutely bursting with a great variety of music: Old-time, bluegrass, gospel, Christmas, children's tunes, Stephen Foster, British and Celtic, cowboy, blues, and more. Because melody and lyrics are provided with every song, singers will also enjoy this wonderful collection of the world's favorite songs. Truly a book of outstanding arrangements, made playable for folks who play for their own enjoyment. (Some of these songs, like ""Dark Hollow"" and ""Way Downtown,"" are hard to find in print.) Guitar, uke, and five-string banjo diagrams are included for the three chords, along with tips on strumming and transposing tips for singers. An invaluable reference book for teachers and pros, too!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 19 Jan 2011
Delivery was on time as ever, but the songs in the book are mostly American folk tunes and I did not know many of them.So for me they were not much help ie "The streets of Laredo" and "Joe Turner Blues" enough said

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Piano Students too. 12 July 2009

I use this book as a beginning chording book for my piano students. It helps that the chord symbols are repeated every measure. This is not the case in most piano scores.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy pickin's 13 July 2010

I'm a beginner banjo player so I can't play very many songs in regular books, but I can do a few things with chords. This is a pretty good book with only 3 chords to play, so if you've mastered them, you can play anything in the book. One problem is that some of the songs don't sound right with only 3 chords, so if you know a few more, you can dress them up a little.

Since I started out learning tabulature, I didn't know how to play from notes on a regular music staff, and this helps me learn them. It tells you what string and fret the beginning note to play for the beginning note so that helps a lot. Another problem is I don't know half of the songs in the book so I'm going to get another instrument I know how to play to do the melody first so I know how the tune goes.

The book has words for all the songs, and sometimes more than one verse so it's fun for sing-a-longs. Anyone who can play chords can play this book, so it's fun. And the songs are alphabetically arranged so if you are trying to find a specific song, you don't have to look at the table of contents.
