I bought this for my 3 year old granddaughter as we like to play 'running from the troll' on the bridge by us but sI couldn't find the ladybird three billy goats gruff book. I am really pleased I couldn't as this is so much nicer. It's funny - with the troll being taken in by the 'to let' advertisement and his 'threats' to the billy goats gruff..it has a lovely rhythm building up the sense of 'scary' and then coming down to r'esolved neatly'. my granddaughter loves the idea of the troll having a penchant for 'goat stew'. The troll manages to look scary but friendly too. It is easy to read and scans well and the illustrations are delightful. The story has a hidden themes - that what you do affects others, that your enjoyment can be anothers nightmare, that there can be good reasons why someone is grumpy, that you can use your mind to create workable solutions, that one can feel compassion for others even when they are scary, and it's helpful to have a bit of give and take. My granddaughter loves it and so do I.. it's our current favourite. If you are hesitating, don't.. buy it!
