Great debut album from a real talent. It's very hard to review this album without reference to the striking similarities in Ruth Notmans voice and that of Kate Rusby. A couple of tracks are so like KR that you would struggle to tell the difference.
If you like singers like Kate Rusby, Eddi Reader or Karine Polwart, then this album is a must.
I look forward to hearing more from Ruth although she maybe needs to develop a style of her own. She does sometimes sound a bit too much like the others.

Do yourself a favour. Buy this album. Ruth is a huge talent. She has an exuberant voice that brings this material to life and gives it a fresh and contemporary feel. There is an undeniable pop sensibility to these interpretation and I found myself instantly enjoying myself.
Now, don't get me wrong, I like the new generation of Folk starlets but they do have a tendency to fall into the slightly mawkish or the down right depressing. I like a slow and tragic ballad sung sonorously and slowly to minimal accompaniment as much as the next man but sometimes you want something that'll wake you up, put a smile on your face and remind you the folk is an exuberant uplifting artform. This is something that Ruth seems to get. This is how an ultra talented 18 year old should sound, not world weary but passionate.

From the first few seconds of hearing her voice you are hooked. Ruth has a wonderful voice, one which takes you by suprise and seems unpredictable in a way that keeps you gripped and wanting to listen again and again.I bet she is fantastic live and I can't wait to see her at her open air gig at Hatfield House in July.
Yes there are resemblances to Kate Rusby, but why should that be a bad thing - Kate Rocks! Go and buy this album if you are a fan of real talent.
