A brave step from Ostrom, considering the baggage he carries, but the risk comes off. Inevitably the music will be compared with that of EST and, equally inevitably, there are constant reminders of that wonderful trio throught this album. That said, Thread Of Life is different enough from EST's main canon to be a departure. Every track is well worth inclusion, but, for me, the standout is "Ballard For E," a plangent call not to forget what the world of Jazz lost almost three years ago.Still can remember what I was doing when I heard the news.

This album grows on you with repeated listens. Of course it is overshadowed by loss, and this is reflected in both the titles and the music. It lacks the happier moods of some of EST but, like Dan Bergland's album, it is reminiscent of some of their more melancholic tunes like 'From Gagarin' Point of View'. If you are a fan of EST then buy both.

I still miss EST - and stumbling over this album was like coming back to something and still finding something new and exciting!
