The best book any Canadian has written about his war experiences, and one of the best books about the war that has been written anywhere.

Product Description

During World War II, Canada trained tens of thousands of airmen under the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Those selected for Bomber Command operations went on to rain devastation upon the Third Reich in the great air battles over Europe, but their losses were high. German fighters and anti-aircraft guns took a terrifying toll. The chances of surviving a tour of duty as a bomber crew were almost nil. Murray Peden's story of his training in Canada and England, and his crew's operations on Stirlings and Flying Fortresses with 214 Squadron, has been hailed as a classic of war literature. It is a fine blend of the excitement, humour, and tragedy of that eventful era. Murray Peden was the first Chairman of the Manitoba Securities Commission. A bestselling author, his articles have appeared in aviation magazines and newspapers in Canada, England, and the United States. He was a bomber pilot in World War II, and his autobiography has been hailed as one of the finest war memoirs ever written.

My personal favourite 10 Jun 2005
Format:Paperback
I guess that if you're reading this then you are already an afficianado of aviation history. In that case, you'll love it.
The start is a bit prosey and dated, but once you're past the third chapter you will be so absorbed in the story that you won't notice.
It's the standard story of a tour on bombers (mainly Stirlings which is interesting), but told in a unique style which will have you alternating between laughter and tears. The foreward contains a ringing endorsement from Bomber Harris, so I suppose that says it all. Enjoy.

As an ex RAF serviceman; I appreciate the warmth and honesty and humour inside this well written book; So intersting I just could'nt put it down untill it was finished; It highlights the cost in lives of the Canadian service men, that toured with the RAF in those dark times; well done Murray!

A great overview 10 Nov 2007
Format:Paperback
This book covering Peden's service history gives a great overview not only of battle service but also training. The coverage here of the often overlooked British Commonwealth Air Training Plan gives the reader a look at how the air force produced the thousands of trained airmen required for the fight.
Eminently readable, it also gives an inner look at relationships that developed between the aircrew members. I find myself quoting from this book whenever a discussion of bomber command comes up.
