This is probably the most up-to-date and comprehensive guide to Chinese painting around, conveying much of the beauty, variety and richness of landscape, figure, bird and flower painting. It charts the course of painting in China from the prehistoric to the present. If there is anything one needs to discover about Chinese art then one can be almost certain to find it here. As a student studying Chinese art, it is an indispensible guide, and for more general readers it will provide an in-depth knowledge. It is a very accesible book, made even more so by the hundreds of magnificent colour images and a particularly readable narrative. Fantastic quality!

I bought this for a chinese friends birthday and it is a wonderfully informative and beautiful book for anyone who loves Chinese art.
Even if you don't want to sit down and digest everything, (it would take a long time) it is at the very least a fabulous coffee table aquisition!

A very good overview of Chinese traditional paintings with clear text and it is well illustrated. The book provides a good starting point for the study and enjoyment of these interesting paintings which have totally different iconographies and pictorial formats to that of Western traditional paintings based on the Renaissance. Although it covers some 3,000 years of endeavour by Chinese painters it it is comprehensive in spite of it being contained in one volume I agree with the writer in Apollo who wrote that "is a magnificent book ...accessible to the general reader and revelatory for the scholar". The coloured reproductions are good and clear. Apart from some early wall paintings the illustrated paintings are limited to those whose paintings whose supports are silks and paper; paintings on potteries are not covered nor are eighteenth century Chinese export paintings. There no reference to embroideries but then the title specifies "Chinese paintings". The book includes a useful glossary. I like the book and I go back to it for reference and enjoyment
