I completely disagree with the previous reviewer, I too have been a follower and a fan of Nile for quite sometime ( Since Black Seeds of Vengeance)and can honestly say that I think this could be their best release yet!
I have had this (rather shamefully) since it leaked online a while ago and I have listened to it relentlessly since then. I was initially quite skeptical as I was rather let down by the last album 'Ithyphalic' which had a horrible production and a lack of memorable songs. I was one of the growing legion who seemed to think that Nile had ran out of steam, bands like Origin were coming along with the brilliant 'Antithesis'and pushing the envelope and it seemed Nile were to be left behind.
So it was with astonishment that my ears greeted this new rejuvenated Nile, more taut and tight, better songs and a palpable sense of hunger and urgency.
The first thing I noticed was the vast improvement in production, this is perfect, crisp and epic with every instrument audible and finding its appropriate place in the mix. Secondly, the songs! These are some of the best tracks Nile have ever conceived; the opening riff on 'Kafir!' is a total blast, so intricate but so pummeling. The same can be said of 'Utterances of the crawling dead' which almost reminds me of the groove of Gojira. Its not all 100mph though, there are also moments of loping Doom or Sludge to be found in here and pleasingly loose and ponderous passages of various instrumentation.
I disagree too with the constant assertion that the Egyptian theme is merely a gimmick, it has now penetrated deeply into the fibre of the band and is a seamless part of their sound and atmosphere...though they are of course a Death Metal band, they are always evocative of the ancient and the Eastern. They are also completely unique and instantly recognisable, never more so than on this album with the gleaming production allowing this to shine.
High points are pointless, this album is brilliance and the best Nile have made since ITDS!!!
