Product Description

From the Publisher

Homage to a village's dead servicemen
After the First World War, nothing was ever the same. When those fateful shots were fired in Sarajevo they set off a series of events that changed the face of Europe forever. Communities were decimated and almost a whole generation of young men simply disappeared. In this tribute to the men of Colton in Staffordshire, England who died during the conflict, the authors trace what happened to each person who is commemorated on the village war memorial for making the supreme sacrifice. Also featured are the village's Second World War victim and a veteran of the Crimean War. Colton today has still retained much of its Edwardian character despite a large amount of new building over the past twenty years but, sadly there are few residents who have any family connection with the men on the memorial. For this reason, if for no other, it is hoped that this little book will serve as a record so that future generations will be aware why it is so important to remember those who gave their lives. The book is illustrated with photographs taken of the headstones of the dead servicemen - or if these do not exist, where their names have been carved on the monuments dedicated to them and their comrades.
