"Those were the Days" is originally a Russian folk song composed by Boris Fomin (1900-1948) with lyrics by the Russian poet Konstantin Podrevskii. The English version of the lyrics was written by Gene Raskin. The song was made famous by the 1968 recording of the Welsh folk singer, Mary Hopkin. It was produced by the English singer-songwriter, Paul McCartney, a former member of The Beatles. The song was the number one hit in the UK Singles Chart and number 2 in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 in 1968. It is about the reminiscence of youth and idealism, which conjures up in my mind images of the counter-culture and the protest of the Vietnam War in the 60's. Those were the days, indeed.
