Roy Hudd's numerous performances in "Those were the Days" makes him one of the most experienced of artists in the music-hall tradition, and here he puts the numbers across in classic style, backed by a well-chosen band and chorus. Some of the songs are very familiar: the great Albert Chevalier's "My Old Dutch", for instance, and Gus Elen's 'It's a Great Big Shame." But there are other songs the listener will probably be hearing for the first time - the wistful "Mrs. Henry Hawkins," the touching picture of London's underprivileged "While London Sleeps" - how relevant it still is - and the outrageous "The Hole in the Elephant's Bottom." This CD is digitally re-mastered from an LP Roy Hudd made more than 20 years ago, and having heard it, I spent years trying to track down a copy, without success. Now that it is on CD it really deserves to be known to a much wider audience of connoisseurs, music-hall lovers, and for that matter those simply interested in having a good time.

This album is as good as seeing Roy Hudd 'live', which I have done many times.

Roy on disc is as real as if he is in your front room giving you a personal performance.

My favourite song is 'While London Sleeps' and as he says on stage it as relevant now as it was 100 years ago.
'A doorstep for your bed, another for your 'ead' what a vivid picture those words conjure up.

This is definitely one for all Music Hall afficianados.
