Product Description

A practical guide to understanding Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

M. E., commonly called Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, is an illness about which very little is understood. Doctors have difficulty identifying it, and then can often offer no solution other than bed rest.

Dr Anne Macintyre has suffered from M.E. for over 10 years. But she has used her medical expertise to understand the causes of M.E., to communicate the reality of the disease to her sceptical colleagues and, most importantly, has learned how to recover from it. This revised edition of her much acclaimed book gives clear and comprehensive guidelines on:
• exercise, rest and relaxation
• nutrition and supplements
• coping with a change in lifestyle
• managing depression
• particular problems for women with M.E.
• psychiatric approches to the illness

Hi like a lot of readers have said this is a very helpful examination of this illness by a doctor who is also a sufferer. I,ve had ME for over 20 years now& have many other secondary illness,s like arthritis diabetes fibromyalga even having a Basel cell carcinoma at one point. She quite rightly points out that to much was made of the illness being some kind of psychiatric or psychological thing. No matter what I,ve tried over the years I cannot get better( believe me I,ve tried all kinds of treatments. some private & very costly) where I differ from the book is that I believe ME & CFS are different illnesses. she does state that: CFS is not a good name for this illness as it implies it,s only " some kinda tiredness thing" I feel that one very important medical factor,s been overlooked. In the year 2000 professor behan& a colleague produced a paper that stated a very important find: that ME patients over produced a chemical choline in the brain. So little has been made of this discovery that makes one wonder what are the medical profession hiding about this illness& why. Surely there should be treatment based on this finding. Why is the organic nature of ME still not recognised. Despite the scientific evidence. Here,s a factor; professor pinkerton( whose now retired )and was the head of infectious diseasess unit at a glasgow hospital told me----you know a lot of people won,t believe your ill cause you look so fit & tanned especially doctors as they can,t say: I DON,T KNOW.

Is this book a 'con' 29 Mar 2010
Format:Paperback
This book may be good for ME sufferers if you don't mind it being out of date by over ten years. The publishers and Amazon say this book was published and updated in 2009 on their websites, the original being published in 1998. Amazon have accepted by email that this is not true and have said they will update their web site - they haven't. The publishers have said by email that it is updated but when I queried further pointing out that there was no evidence of this in the book, they have ignored my emails - presumably acceptance that it is not updated. So, it may be a good book but is 12 years out of date, 12 years in which there have been a fair few developments in ME.

I read this book many years ago and as a starting point to understandng what was wrong with me I found it useful and I knew what I was facing, now though it is outdated.
