Friendships can be complicated and add in the great distances that we now maintain friendships over and the fact that so much more communication has to be packed into the time that we do see each other means those friendships are getting ever more complex. This book explores, with great insight, the friendships between a group of women and their loves and losses. Good for helping both girls and guys to understand just why these things are SO complicated, this book was a great read with realistic well developed characters who I felt I knew by the end of the book. I found I kept picking it up to read a bit more when I should have been working.

This is indeed a book for the times. It is a narrative of friendships across cultures, countries and races, and about emotions and other values that make us human. Thoroughly modern people shows that it's dangerous for relationships when we do not fully explore ourselves to know who we are and what makes us tick. It emphasizes the dangers of not being straightforward with those who care for us, even when we think it is for the best intentions. It also makes the case for forgiveness, especially personal self forgiveness, as a way to move ahead in life.Though the story dragged in a few places, the full cast of characters were interesting enough to save it, and I liked that the setting was as diverse as the people. I love books that can take me on a trip, and this moves from Britain, to Asia, to the Caribbean Islands and then to my city of Seattle in the United States.

Truly enjoyed it! I could not put it down actually. It is such an easy but at the same time engaging girlie read. It does make you smile, cry and happy all at the same time. A must read.
