Product Description

Crime thrillers following DI Tom Thorne, based on the novels by Mark Billingham.

Sleepyhead: follows DI Tom Thornes investigation into a mysterious serial killer. His first three victims ended up dead. His fourth was not so fortunate. Alison Willetts is unlucky to be alive. She has survived a stroke, deliberately induced by manipulation of pressure points on the head and neck. She can see, hear and feel, she is aware of everything going on around her, but she is unable to move or communicate. In leaving Alison alive, the police believe the killer's made his first mistake.

Scaredy Cat: is a second DI Tom Thorne thriller, where killing becomes a team sport. The film depicts a vicious, calculated murder. The killer selected his victim at Euston station, followed her home, and strangled her to death in front of her child. At the same time, in the same way, a second body is discovered at the back of Kings Cross. Thorne discovers that this is not a single serial killer he’s up against, but two of them.

I am a big fan of Mark Billingham's books and was slightly nervous when I heard they were adapting Sleephead and Scaredy Cat for television. However I need not have worried both adaptions remain faithfull to the original novels and David Morrissy makes an excellent Tom Thorne. Hopefully the rest of Mark Billingham's Tom Thorne novels will be adapted soon.

Each story is 3 episodes long. The other reviewer pointed out that the last episode of Scardy Cat was missing. I have to say all 3 episodes were on my disk though the sleave has the incorrect running time (for only 2 episodes). Hopefully it looks like the problem has now been rectified. The sound and picture quality on both stories is excellent. The only down side is the lack of special features - a making of or commentary track would have been nice but it's just a minor gripe. This 2 disk set is well worth watching if you enjoy a good crime series.

After the superb performance by David Morrissey as "Bradley Headstone" in Dickens' "Our Mutual Friend", I wasn't quite sure if I could take Morrissey seriously as DI Thorne in Thorne: Sleepyhead & Scaredy Cat. But I'm glad I took the risk and bought this dvd sight unseen as I could not be sure I'd ever see it broadcast in the U.S. or via BBC America. Once again David Morrissey pulled off an excellent performance as well as the entire acting ensemble who worked together very well together. The screenplays were excellently written & the film production was fabulous!. These stories had me on the edge of my seat especially with respect to the Scaredy Cat episode. I hope to see more Thorne stories on dvd in the future and in the meantime, I'll have to give Mark Billingham's Thorne novels a read.

5.0 out of 5 stars First rate stuff ! 15 Feb 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Okay, this is not 24 or spooks, but it is definately up there with any of Val Mcdermid's books that have been turned into T.V. films. No mean feat adapting books to the screen, but in my opinion they have done a first rate job. Excellent acting alround and a plot that keeps you glued to the screen.

So i say buy it and i hope they adapt all of Mark Billinghams books to screen.

I appreciate that there is going to be some dramatisation when a book is translated onto a screen, but in this case it was over the top. Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish I hadn't read the book first
These DVDs are good but not as good as the original books by Mark Billingham. There were many deviations from the novel which spoilt them a bit for me.
