3.0 out of 5 stars The Opposite of Wallander? 20 Oct 2010
By Bruce TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I am a big fan of Wallander and was looking for more in the same style, so a Swedish Crime thriller seemed to be a good bet?

However I am now tempted to say that this is almost exactly the opposite of Wallander in every way. So there is a sense in which a lot of Police detectives are solitary men, who have problems, but are usually married to the job and devote every waking hour to it!

After reading Red Wolf I can see why this is the case - so a Detective's single-minded obsession, allows the narrative to flow and concentrate on the case in hand. Which is satisfying for the reader and creates the "pace" of the thriller genre.

However in Red Wolf the story stalls on many occasions, while we catch up with best friend Anna and her descent into alcoholism; or we follow husband Tomas in his infidelities or sort out the children's care. It all gets very stodgy in the middle and as a serious reader I am impressed by the way that characters are realistic and fully-realised. But really, my inner self is screaming - "just get on with it - there's a killer out there!"

I do think that it is very worthy that we have a heroine who is struggling with all the issues that modern working women face - but on the other hand, I didn't really believe that the Police would hand over secret details of a very sensitive nature to a maverick journalist? This seemed bizzare to me - why did all these people give away all these crucial clues to a newspaper writer - I would have told her to mind her own business and this spoiled the whole thing for me.

I'm afraid I shall be back to the damaged, solitary male detectives in future - it may seem un-natural, but in practice there is a good long heritage there - Holmes, Morse, Wallander etc. Having read this book I can now see why this model works so well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling Scandinavian crime novel 12 Sep 2010
By AR VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
After a traumatic incident, journalist Annika Bengtzon has become obsessed with writing about terrorism. Whilst investigating an obscure terrorist attack in northern Sweden from thirty years earlier, she uncovers a string of murders carried out by a vicious killer. As Annika is drawn further into a complicated web of murder and politics, her marriage begins to fall apart around her. Can she help catch the killer and save her relationship?

I read a Liza Marklund novel a few years ago, and remember it being okay but not amazing, so I expected this to be a fairly solid thriller, if not up to the standard of some of the Scandinavian greats like Henning Mankell. However I was pleased that this book was a brilliant thriller - exciting, well plotted and engaging. It has a decent mix of crime and family drama, as Annika Bengtzon is a woman who prizes her family alongside her career, and struggles to combine the two to the best of her ability, which I'm sure any working mother could relate to.

The story is clever and fast paced, with a lot of sub plots that add to character development. In particular, Annika's husband, Thomas, and best friend, Anne, both have storylines that provide some action outside of the murder and mayhem, but also help to show Annika as a rounded character with a life away from her work.

This is well-written and atmospheric, and Marklund has clearly done a lot of research, which adds to the story. I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys a clever thriller, especially fans of Scandinavian crime fiction, and I will certainly go back and seek out some of the earlier novels in this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Complex but worth it 10 Oct 2010
By Gareth Wilson - Falcata Times Blog TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Whilst a lot of the crime tales written by the English speaking world are becoming more predictable, foreign author's are managing to not only carve their own bloody niche but create a real reading experience.

Here Liza Marklund takes the world of crime, throws in some politics alongside aspirations and delivers something unique. The characters are fresh, they have a believability about them and overall the story arc is more than satisfactory. Add plausible scenario's, a fully realised leading lady alongside some no frill stark prose which leaves the reader into a sub world that scares the hell out of you.

It's different, it's gory and it's definitely something that deserves to be turned into a film. A real gem of a title that will keep the reader up longer than you really should be, with the phrase of "just a few more pages" becoming a regular occurrence. Overall, don't blame us if you're too tired for work and please don't tell the boss it was our fault for recommending this to you.
