Book Description

Sixteen-year-old Mattalina Thorn grows up believing that she is one third of a typical 21st century family. Her mother leaves the military to start a life coaching and security agency with Mattalina’s aunt, after the latter decides that she no longer wants to be a counselor for the wealthy. All is perfect for Mattalina. Until right before her seventeenth birthday, when someone takes a knife to her aunt’s face; no one is telling Mattalina why.

Bran Van Dyke knows he is different from most eighteen-year-olds. While other boys his age graduate from high school, play sports and perhaps flirt, Bran is training to become the protector of the family to whom the Van Dykes owe their freedom. He likes his role in life, and when he gets reacquainted with the youngest—and most excitable—of the Thorns, Bran goes from liking his role to absolutely loving it.

But in war, love and Stories things are rarely what they seem. In Thorn in Red, typical becomes uncanny very quickly: reality is crafted by imagination; tradition uses fresh and deadly methods to preserve the old ways; Matt and Bran enter a realm where life and progress depend on death, on the reshaping of ancient lore, and on the heart of a couple of teenagers.

I write, read and dream dark fiction. A childhood in the Caribbean, adolescence in New York, and part of my adulthood in the United States Marine Corps filled my head with stories. I plan to tell them. Visit to know more.

At first you think this story is about another stroppy teenager, but within a couple of paragraphs it becomes so much more. Constantly twisting and turning around the story thread. Even the heroine has no idea what's coming next...from horrific life threatening encounters to the first blushes of romance. A riot of a read!

Only the most creative of minds could come up with a story like this! It has everything a YA could want from a novella, and I would recommend it in a heartbeat. My eyes devoured each page in one sitting, and left me hungry for more of this author's work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not AlmaMia but... 1 May 2014

...that shouldn't stop you from picking up this book, especially if you are a fan of the urban fantasy genre. While this frothy beach read doesn't have the same magical realism/ literary vibe that the author's other book has, there's some depth going on beyond the surface story of two teens trying to work out their feelings towards each other in a fast paced Gothic fairy tale romp. Oh sure, the story is a very simple one on the surface - easily read, digested as a fun bon-bon of a book. But this author seems to like to layer meanings in her story. So whether you just want a simple bit of light escapism in your story - or if you are one given to going a bit deeper for symbolism - this is an enjoyable read.

Follow Mattalina and Bran as they realize their love for each other while they fight for their way through dangerous and exciting situations. No one is safe as the landscape and cast of characters morphs and changes. Magaly has once again woven the dark and light together to horrify and delight.

Great read for young adults and older folks, too!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great! 20 Feb. 2014

I received a copy to read and review. It’s a very interesting story. I couldn’t put it down. Magaly is great at using unique story lines in the books she has written. The reader is sucked into Mattalina’s world from page one. She learns things aren’t as they seem with her family and those around her. She is thrown into a new world she didn’t know existed. She is learning things as she goes and trying to come to terms with all of it along the way. I look forward to reading more of Magaly’s books.

I cannot give this book enough stars. Make sure you have enough time when you start because you won't be able to put it down till the end. It's fast paced, and keeps you on edge the entire ride. Magaly has done it again!
