Book Description

Did you ever wonder what has happened to gas mantles and chimney pieces, or why people don't go 'courting' anymore? In her new book, Thora Hird takes us on a trip down memory lane to the world as it was before the Second World War.

From the Back Cover

Did you ever wonder what has happened to gas mantles and chimney pieces, or why people don't go 'courting' anymore? In her new book, Thora Hird takes us on a trip down memory lane to the world as it was before the Second World War. In her usual warm, chatty and anecdotal style, she reminds us of all those words, objects and expressions that have gone out of modern usage and illustrates them with a plethora of funny stories from her own early years. Thora looks back at domestic life, the theatre, going to church, growing up before the war, working in shops, and, never forgetting her true Morecambe roots, the hustle and bustle of the northern seaside town.

Memories of how we used to live and how hard people used to work. Long before the labour saving tools of today. Once you have read this book you will never take the humble washing machine for granted again!

The item was just what was needed. I had to replace a copy that I had lost from my local library. Ironically the amazon sourced copy was a culled copy from an English county library. I am happy and so is my local library!

Having a penchant for all things vintage, I absolutely enjoyed this book. It shows the everyday life of bygone days, from how laundry was done to how people 'courted' and 'Horlicks' on dates to 'interior decoration'... and much much more.
The book feels very personal, almost as if I was reading Hirds private journal. Very well written.
