Yep, the artwork is sublime and the storyline fine, but, maybe it's because we all know where Thor/Marvel/Asgard is going (Siege), there's not the degree of drama here that there should be. The Sif one-shot is particularly pedestrian considering her plotline through the previous couple of years. Still a good read and clearly a completist must-have but see my review of 'Siege-Aftermath' for Thor at his best!

Transition from Straczynski to Gillen is Sleek 2 Jun 2010
By Tyler S. - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Latverian Prometheus is pretty fun. This short series feels identical in tone and art to Straczynski's run, which is great. Gillen is not as good as Straczyski, because sometimes I have to re-read his material. Our previous author just had a way with words that was so simple, but incredibly smart and precise. I won't hate on Gillen though, because he's doing a great job. With only 3 issues in this trade, it's hard to make definate conclusions at this point. One other small thing I liked, was the portrayal of Loki. Loki did not fool anyone when he tried manipulating Balder and others. I'll try not to ruin anything, but Loki doesn't just lie his way out of every basket this time. I'm tired of seeing Asgardian gods fall prey to silly lies, and Gillen did a great job at coming up with Loki's role in this story arc. On the contrary, Loki's artwork looked dissimilar. Loki looked thoughtful and sleepish, not devilish like the Loki we all know.

The only thing I didn't like was the "Pull the rug from under your feet" trick at the end. The long awaited battle between Doom and Thor is fun, but it's also very evasive. While we can't just kill off characters, it still shouldn't allow us to let villains escape by any means necessary. Other than this factor, Latverian Prometheus is very solid.

It's short, but it's worth the money. The couple extra bonus issues at the end are a plus to help lengthen the trade. Sif #1 and Mini Marvels are very fun. I would have rather bought this short trade that fills the space with extra side stories, than to wait very much longer for more core Thor issues.

Gillen, you are doing a fine job. Your material is comparable to Straczynski and this story was very entertaining. Keep up with the pageturning adventures and I'll see you in Siege:Thor. This has to be the smoothest transition from author to author I've seen. The artwork of Billy Tan is also nearly identical to Coipel. Now that the "passing of the torch" has been processed, I'm dying to know what happens next.

Gillen surprises with a strong debut 7 July 2010
By Sean Curley - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
J. Michael Strackzynski vacated the premises of the main "Thor" title with perhaps undue haste, resulting from his dislike of crossovers. He left the Asgardians stranded behind enemy lines in Latveria, and Thor banished from his own people. An unpromising place to begin what was essentially a filler run (new full-time writer Matt Fraction arrives in the autumn), but that is where Kieron Gillen's run picks up. And, to a certian extent against the ods, Gillen's run turns out to be a big success. Collected here are issues 604-606 of the regular title, as well as the "Sif" one-shot, and an extra from the "Thor #600" anniversary issue previously uncollected. Some spoilers follow.

The three issues written by Gillen are the "Latverian Prometheus" story arc which provides the trade with its title, and a finale to the Asgardians' ill-starred sojourn into the nation of card-carrying villain Doctor Doom. JMS' run ended with them realizing that moving into the nation of a despotic supervillain was perhaps not the best idea, while Doom perserveres in his monstrous experiments using Asgardian bodies to acquire the power of the gods. As a biproduct, he has turned them into grotesque supersoldiers to serve his whim, and acquired a weapon of extreme power that will allow him to challenge even Thor. Thor, meanwhile, is drawn to the aid of his people. Gillen's work with the characters in superb; he writes a far more competent Balder than JMS ever presented, and his Thor is effectively powerful. Kelda, JMS' star-crossed lover, is written movingly. Most of all, Gillen writes a superb Doctor Doom; every other line he says is quotable. Billy Tan does a good job on art (his standard big-chested man is especially suited to Asgardians).

The other contents of the collection are, firstly, a brief anniversary story written by Stan Lee, with art by David Aja. It's brief, and rather on the cheesey side, but that's a Stan Lee anniversary story for you. You'd probably be disappointed if it wasn't like that. Aja is an interesting choice to illustrate something by Lee, and you would think that his gritty realism would contrast poorly with Lee's standard over-the-top style, but somehow it works. The main attraction of the extras, though, is the full-issue-length special focussed on Thor's girlfriend Sif, who went through some big changes in JMS' run, but whose return was handled in the space of a few pages, with little in the way of followup. Written by Kelly DeConnick (wife of Matt Fraction, incidentally), with art by Ryan Stegman, it gives her a bit of solo time (well, it's a team-up with her ex-lover Beta Ray Bill and his new girlfriend, Ti Asha Ra). It's a nice story, and welcome focus, given all the character has been through.

Recommended.
A Great Conclusion to a Great Arc! 13 April 2012
By Frest Humphrey - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
When JMS left Thor due to the impending events of Siege, it fell to Kieron Gillen to finish what has been an amazing story, not an easy task. He pulled it off with aplomb, however, and fans of the run will be pleased to know that this wraps up everything quite nicely for the `Return of Thor' story arc as Asgard declares war on Dr. Doom for his crimes against the Gods.

Art fell to Billy Tan, who while not as amazing as Coipel, provides some great shots in this book, such as Thor nuking Doom's castle with lightning, as well as some gruesome scenery regarding Doom's purpose in involving himself with Asgard. The fight between Thor and Doom is every bit as good as the fight with the Destroyer in Volume 1 or Bor in Volume 2. His proportions get a little off at times (Thor's shoulders are enormous in one panel for example), but Tan's art is overal excellent.

Also collected are a 1-shot about Sif, which is a neat little story where she helps old Thor ally Beta Ray Bill; a little story by Stan Lee in celebration of Thor's 600 issue milestone; and a little comic-strip celebration by Chris Giarrusso. Though obviously included to pad out this book's otherwise short length, they are cool little extras nonetheless, especially since Sif didn't get to do much after Thor saved her.

Fans of the run will be quite happy with this conclusion. All in all, `The Return of Thor' has been a great arc and I'm glad to have it in my small, but beloved collection.
