5.0 out of 5 stars Real verve & pizzaz! 27 Mar 2011
Format:Audio CD
A wonderful performance led by Ronald Corp. (He's a very fine composer, too - check out his piano concerto and 1st symphonny on Dutton!). Huge amounts of intelligently directed energy and elan. Equals or (I suspect) betters Stokowski's classic recording. Excellent sound quality, too. Ronald Corp and his forces simply leave the dull and dreary Naxos performance by The Post-Classical Ensmble in the dust of the American plains!

5.0 out of 5 stars Virgil Thomson: Louisiana Story 4 Sep 2007

I ordered this CD from Radar Records. Amazingly, it arrived the very next day. What great service. Although the CD is secondhand, the quality is excellent. I can't fault it. Well done.

4.0 out of 5 stars Truly Beautiful Americana 7 April 2007
By Peggy Stone - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The four stars are only because the dynamic range seems a bit off - I had to crank up my sound system to double its usual setting to really enjoy this (and then a few crashing chords were through the roof). However, this was a "must own" for me if only for the first section from "Louisiana Story," which is one of the most beautiful pieces of music ever... it makes me shut my eyes and smile for pure bliss. A friend made a tape of it for me years ago, and I had never forgotten it. Recently, I finally put "Louisiana Story" on my NetFlix queue and could hardly send it back for the photography/music of the opening sequence. The CD recording isn't quite the same, but it's only off by a little (and has the advantage of not being interrupted by the film's narrative), but then, this is a suite, and not a soundtrack. The other works are also compelling, and I was pleasantly surprised to hear a theme I had always loved in Copeland's "Rodeo," assuming the tune to be original with him. Especially considering the low price, this is a great addition to your musical library.

4.0 out of 5 stars A haunting score of life's realities by Thomson 11 Mar 1999
By VIJAY N CHAK - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
This absolutely brilliant score by Thomson brings to us a wonderful re-creation of life's realities in the early 1940's Louisiana during the great depression. This movie score is subtle, tender and reflects Thomson's virtuosity that makes us identify ourselves with that period. Especially the score for "Louisiana Suite" is captivating.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievably Bad Audio 3 Oct 2012
By Jerry Thornhill - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Reviewer Peggy Stone was way too kind when she commented that the dynamic range on this recording "seems a bit off."Like Ms. Stone I had to turn the volume way, way up to hear the softer passages and was nearly jolted out of my seat when the louder ones came along.
Recording engineer Mike Clements is either one of most inept in the business or was having a very bad day when he put this CD together. The only way one can listen to it is to constantly have your hand on the volume control. I got through it once and then threw the damn thing in the garbage. I don't want it in my library and it was a complete waste of money. It's too bad because the content deserves a better recording.
