4.0 out of 5 stars Thomson DHD4000 review, 22 Feb 2006
By Moz (Cambridgeshire) - See all my reviews
It looks like a home eletronics project but it works a treat. It's intuitive to use and the digital recordings are a pleasure to watch.
The great feature is the dual tuner which lets you watch one channel and record another, or to record 2 channels simultaneously.
The 40G disk size could be increased. However should you feel brave there is a lot of support for these types of set-top-boxes online and apparently it is possible to upgrade to 120G.
A favourite topic of these boxes is the alledged fan noise. Yes the HDD squeaks as it fires up and you can just hear it humming at night but no big deal. I've not encountered fan noise yet.
There could have been a bit more work done to the way you select programs to be recorded. To select a program the same evening is easy, but you can spend a lot of time selecting something to record a week away.
It still deserves 4 stars despite my ramblings. And you'll love the blue leds on the front...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 31 Jul 2006
By Daniel Taylor "tayldn" (London, UK) - See all my reviews

I simply can't fault this unit- had it 2 yrs. Very reliable- crashes extremely rarely without dataloss. Which just means you turn it off and on.
-100% reliable recording
- You can record a whole series through the 'record weekly' option (this is a real difference over most PVRs I've seen)
- Has a 2 week EPG which is much better if you're on hols (again- a real benefit over competition)
- Has 2 tuners (which again is a big benefit and real difference over most makes of PVR)
- Has Freeview built in
- the interface is ridiculously simple; I could record a single programme or an entire series in sub-30 seconds
The Disk is a bit small meaning you have to keep deleting stuff and also there is no DVD recorder which in the ideal world you would have.
It's good enough for me though and just does the job- I no longer worry EVER about catching a programme on the night it is shown. Freedom- Hurrah!

very happy with this little box very easy to use picture and sound excellent the fan is not noisey at all and it also stops in stand by mode which some reviews say it keeps runing.maybe mine is one the last batch made which i read thomson had updated the boxes and ironed out some problems.over all value for money at £100 so if you can get hold of one a good buy.

Purchased this box in time to manage all those interruptions you inevitably get during the world cup...it's great being able to pause live tv. Read more
