The original Thomas story book, 28 Sep 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Thomas the Tank Engine (Railway) (Hardcover)
This is the book which introduces Thomas the Tank Engine. We see him develop from a cheeky little engine who annoys the larger engines into an engine who earns the accolade 'really useful' from the Fat Controller. The reader can enjoy his cheekiness, empathise with his aspirations and share his excitement at being given a branch-line all to himself. He is very much like a small child who tests the limits and is rewarded or chastised as appropriate. Perhaps that's why my little one is so besotted with him! The illustrations are, as ever, very interesting, and Mum/Dad have to read the stories over and over. The engines', coaches' and trucks' language echoes the sounds of the real thing, as usual. Our little boy loves this book - he has given each story its own name and knows them all so well that he can fill in the blanks if you stop halfway through a sentence. A well-loved and much-thumbed book.

The most luxurious Thomas book ever!, 8 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This book is a real treat for any Thomas fan in the little tank engine's 60th anniversary year. With a real cloth jacket in classic blue, silver gilding and embossing on the dust jacket. The captions inside are a nice touch too. Perfect for a christening or special birthday gift - I hope my godson will like it when a bit older!! This is limited edition too, so should prove highly collectible.

Perfect for fans young and not so young!, 21 Jan 2009
I have just purchased this book as a birthday present for my son. He loves Thomas and much prefers watching the classic episodes than the new ones. I had a look through this book when it arrived and was suddenly whisked back 20 years down memory lane to the days when I loved Thomas and realised, these stories are timeless. I loved them, my son loves them and, unless he draws all over this book, his children will love them too. The lovely, kindly tone in which they're written will sooth your child (or amuse them if, like me you like to read them in a Ringo Starr voice!) and if you yourself were a Thomas fan in your youth, you'll enjoy reading them again and again and probably marvel at how cheeky Thomas, fussy Henry, arrogant Gordon and obnoxious James are loved so much by so many. It's also nice to read your children a book that credits them with a little more intelligence than a lot of books do today and employs subtlety in its morals rather than ramming them down kids' throats.
