A funny and inspiring alternative election manifesto

Product Description

Mark Thomas has been touring the country for months, getting audiences to come up with policies aimed at sorting out the country’s political chaos and taking back the power for the people. Sick to death of bailing out bankers and subsidising MPs homes, the audience vote on the best policy of the night to be included in the brand new People’s Manifesto. From the inspiring to the downright hilarious, you’ll wonder why these fantastic ideas aren’t part of the constitution already. For example:- All politicians will be forced to wear the names and logos of the companies sponsor them or with whom they have financial links.- Anyone who supports ID cards is banned from having curtains. - All models have to be picked at random from the electoral register.- Anyone found guilty of homophobic hate crime has to serve their sentence in drag.- CEOs convicted of fraud will be made to dress as pirates in whatever job they get in the future. The People’s Manifesto will outline 50 policies of the manifesto shouted out in bold type on a page to themselves with Mark's commentary opposite. Mark has even ‘road tested' some of them - like hosting a party in an MP’s second home (which clearly belongs to the taxpayer) and getting university boffins to work out a way of SAT testing MPs to rank them by value. And Mark’s guerrilla antics won’t end there…Power to the people is really happening.

Seriously funny 19 Feb 2010
Format:Paperback
I bought this book on a whim (not from Amazon I should confess) as I very much enjoyed the Radio 4 comedy show that inspired it. I expected it to be funny (which it is, very!) but it is also an important call for us, the electorate to get off our backsides and start taking an interest in what our elected officials are doing. We elected them, they work of us! It's is a mandate from us to improve the lot of all the people in this country and not an opportunity for MPs (and others) to feather their own nests or climb in bed with big business. Hopefully this little book will make people think a bit more about how we use our votes come the next election but if not it will certainly make you laugh.

By GeekZilla TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
Mark Thomas is one of the UK's most intelligent and vitriolic left wing comedians, his comedy not only makes you laugh but it strikes a chord and makes you think. Despite all of this he tends to slip under the radar of the general public and is relatively unknown, but he's held in high regard by those familiar with his work.

The People's Manifesto is the product of a live tour which gathered ideas from the audience, the public proposals have been analysed and a sampled in this book. There's a mixture of both daft and serious policies, but whether you're reading a ridiculous proposal about what to do with dog poo or a quite serious item about holding referenda before going to war, the book tackles it intelligently.

It's a genuinely funny book but it's not scared to deal with the real issues beneath the initial statement. For example, the proposal to have all models selected at random from the electoral roll is one of the most amusing parts of the book, and it also recognises a valid social problem when it is presented as a solution to seeing unrealistic idealised images of the body. It explores the morality behind what it proposes, it isn't just a collection of comedic ideas - it's a dissection of modern culture and a lot if it actually seems sensible!

The satirical pages may well educate you too and bolster your political arsenal of facts and figures ready for arguments in the office/pub/living room - did you know for instance that in 2009 benefit cheats may well have cost the country around £900 million whereas rich tax loop-hole abusers lost the UK around £18.5 *billion*!

In a nutshell: At the time of writing this we are in the final week building up to the 2010 general election and Mark Thomas' book is a fantastic way of enjoying politics when the 24-hour news media have peddled the same minor story for days on end until it's been milked so dry that the teat is starting to bleed. Not only is it incredibly amusing, but it does actually have a lot to say and after reading it you may find yourself not necessarily agreeing with everything - but you'll consider the points made to be valid and find them cropping up in conversation.

Format:Kindle Edition
This is for the Kindle edition of the Mark Thomas book, content wise this is a great read if a little short ( I read it in just over an hour). Funny and thought provoking, the peoples manifesto is a combination of funny little quips and great ideas.

The fact this is a short book makes the formatting of the kindle edition so annoying. The first letter of every chapter is on its own line and the formating of title pages should have been looked at so they don't spread over two pages. Lazy work from the publisher.

Succinctly hilarious
In true Mark Thomas style - funny, thought-provoking and refreshingly left- this was a joy to read. Some of the wilder ideas are mentioned as well. but never in a patronising way. Read more

We should've occupied Parliament those 3 days in May...
Having seen this show in Aberdeen, I may be a shade biased on the quality of this book. Sadly, none of my numerous policy ideas made it to the vote, never mind the book, though... Read more

However, in Leviticus God also decrees that menstruating women should be kept separate for seven days and on the eighth day that woman should sacrifice two pigeons to make herself clean again (Lev 15:29), that these pigeons should have their necks wrung by a priest at the altar, the feathers cast to the east side of the altar and the pigeon then burnt on the altar itself (Lev 1:1316).
