Even though I fancy myself a student of California history, I had never heard of this gentleman. At the end of this book, I felt that I had met a man who was probably representative of many men of his era but one that was never so well documented. This book is a fast and interesting read. I was thankful that T.O. Larkin and his heirs had maintained so many of his letters and correspondence and that the authors had waded through it to produce such a concise and thorough picture of his life. The authors were very careful not to judge; however, they fleshed in the man, juxtaposed as he was, in the turbulent California of the 1840s and 1850's. It is a well balanced book in that one is able to form of an opinion of the man and a feel for the historical forces around him. I recommend this book as an enlightening and informative read.
