Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

Thomas, as anyone familiar with the eponymous, wildly popular TV series knows, is a very useful engine, and never more so than in his first theatrical release, which was a modest box-office success. On a tank filled with little more than pluck, determination and goodwill, Thomas sets out full-steam ahead on a danger-fraught mission to help his friend Mr Conductor. The conductor's stash of magic gold dust has run out, leaving him stranded on the Island of Sodor with Junior, his flaky cousin, and Lily, a little girl enlisted to lift her grandfather out of a funk on nearby Muffle Mountain. When Thomas bravely chugs beyond his hometown tracks' buffers with Lily aboard, he's transported to Muffle Mountain's secret railway and to Lady, a long-lost steamer whose legendary engine makes her more powerful than Diesel, the train-yard bully. Together, Thomas and Lady lead Diesel on a chase that causes a bridge to collapse, taking the dastardly Diesel down with it. Most impressive about the movie is its marquee names: Alec Baldwin works magic as the dutiful worrywart Mr Conductor, Mara Wilson is Lily and Peter Fonda plays the cool-looking but lugubrious Grandpa. It's a cast that will keep put-upon parents watching, if half-heartedly. Thomas fans of five years and under, meanwhile, will wish the actors wouldn't blow so much hot air; they will want to see their hero a bigger part in steaming up the storyline. --Tammy La Gorce

From the Back Cover

Join Thomas The Tank Engine and meet lots of new friends in this enchanting family adventure movie, Thomas and the Magic Railroad

Thomas and his friends live on the Island of Sodor, the land of talking trains which has been a realm of magic and innocence, but Diesel 10 and his sidekicks Splatter and Dodge have arrived to cause trouble. Even magical Mr. Conductor, who travels between the train world and the human world of Shining Time, is losing his sparkle. Lily, a resourceful young girl meets him on the way to visit her grandfather and along with Thomas and friends, embarks on an adventure to save the Magic Railroad. Thomas reminds them all that "even little engine scan do big things."

Combining live action and innovative animation, packed with songs and adventure and whistles and steam, Thomas and the Magic Railroad is a wonderful journey that can be enjoyed by anyone who is young at heart.

Our two year old thinks this film is great. Older critics are more divided. We love this film for all the wrong reasons. Not since Alice Through the Looking Glass has there ever been such a bizarre and surreal experience puporting to be entertainment for children.

What were the casting company thinking of? Alec Baldwin as Mr Conductor? (Who?) He was so embarrassed in most scenes he couldn't even look into the camera. Who was the weird Scottish cousin, and more importantly, why? Did we really see Peter Fonda playing a grandfather - and as if within seconds he was about to swallow the pills, throw the noose, slit the wrists or - if all else failed - jump right under Diesel 10? No man has ever given such a depressed, never mind depressing, performance before, surely? He must have been kidding. Please.

This film has nothing to do with Thomas the Tank Engine, nor The Rev W Awdry. What a wasted opportunity for the kids. Oh but what a feast of hilarity for parents! Bunuel eat your heart out!

Children's hero Thomas the Tank Engine Steams into Hollywood. Oh hurrah. Jump for joy. How very exciting. Wake up parents. Your kids may love Thomas, but will they love this movie? you wonder. Well, First of all, most of the trains have american accents and the only ones that don't are Thomas, the cousin and the big engine, Gordon. The TV series and books are great. But the movie is plotless and dull... P.S The Fat Controller is not in the film.

Format:VHS Tape
This Thomas The Tank video contains 9 stories from the 1998 series narrated by Michel Angeleas. Each episode on this tape is a little bit spooky since it was reliesed for halloween. My kids watch this tape over and over and I strongly recommend it.
